The following is an official letter from the office of Earl P. Burt, Director of Athletics at Leesburg High School. It reveals the exact reason and purpose of this announcement
February 16, 1970
Leesburg and Wildwood will not play football in 1970.
It is of deep regret, that Leesburg and Wildwood will not play football during the 1970 season. This will be a big shock to all of the Leesburg and Wildwood football fans. The reason why Leesburg could not sign a new contract was the fact that Wildwood requested a one thousand dollar guarantee, or half the gate receipts.
This past season, Wildwood had its biggest crowd at any Leesburg and Wildwood football game. They really made money.
It has been the agreed rule in the past twelve years, that we sign a contract with Wildwood for a one hundred dollar guarantee to the visiting team. The balance of the gate went to the host school. We have always signed a two-year contract on this basis. This is what we wanted to do for the next two years 1970 and 1971 seasons.
The school officials at Leesburg High School, did not think it would be right for Wildwood to get all the gate receipts from the game this past season, and ask for a one-thousand dollar guarantee from our gate receipts, for this coming season, or, one-half of our gate for the 1970 season.
Leesburg has signed Lake Wales for a two year contract on October ninth. The 1970 game to be played in Leesburg. This was the date we have always played Wildwood.
There will be a proposal to the state, that high schools play the eleventh game. If this comes to pass, We hope we can play Wildwood for this game.
