LEESBURG - The award nominations for Noor Davis keep piling up as the Leesburg High School Senior has been nominated for the Franklin D. Watkins Memorial Trophy Award. Davis has made a verbal commitment to attend Stanford University in 2012 and helped lead the Jackets to a 8-2 (2-2) record in this past season. Davis has excelled not only on the football field but in the classroom also.

The Franklin D. Watkins Memorial Trophy Award
The Franklin D. Watkins Memorial Trophy Award was initiated in 1992 to promote academic excellence among young African-American males. As unavoidable role models on the "image" front lines, talented athletes-especially in football, basketball and baseball-define what the emerging generations of African-American males will value, and the aspirations they will have. The Watkins Trophy Award is a means for recognizing exceptionally talented African-American male athletes who, by their example, help promote high academic standards and a commitment to community service.

I began doing interviews for my blogs and websites with Noor in the summer of 2011 and he leads by example. During that time, I have come to respect Noor not only for his approach to education, but for his commitment to being a role model to school and the Leesburg community. He has always taken time out of his busy schedule to interview with me and my organization, the Carver Heights Quarterback Club, sometimes on a moment’s notice. These kind acts don’t happen too often in the world of journalism.

He is a student first and does whatever he can to uplift our high school and community. He has a 4.33 GPA; is a member of the National Honor’s Society; and has been accepted to Stanford University. Noor plays three sports, donates to charities, and serves on volunteer committees. He does all this while working part time at Chick-Fil-A.
