Leesburg High School's Yellow Jackets will launch the 1953 football season at Memorial Field tonight at 8 o'clock. The Citrus Hurricanes of Inverness High will be the opponents.
Coach Ed Stack reported his team ready for action with only two of his charges on the injured list. Regular center Giles Pettit will miss the first game due to a severe foot bruise, and Jimmy Marshall, one of last year's outstanding backs, will be used sparingly. Marshall is still limping from an ankle sprain.
Coach Stack will open with nine seniors and two juniors on the offensive lineup. The starting defense will include only two, or possible three changes.
Inverness also boasts a veteran lineup of all seniors, with the possible exception of one junior end. Their defensive team has not been made available to the local school.
The Jackets have been made two to three touchdown favorites to win the opener. Although the two grid teams did not meet last year, the Hurricanes' poor record of one victory and nine defeats makes them the underdogs.
The local eleven will also have a decided weight advantage. The Jacket line will outweigh the Hurricane forwards by only a few pounds per man at the start, but Coach Stack is holding out his big boys, some of whom tip the scales at over 200 pounds. In the backfield the Jackets will have a 13-pound per man advantage over the Inverness starters.
A large crowd is expected to turn out tonight to watch the first performance of a Yellow Jacket team that is heralded as the best to represent Leesburg High School in a number of years.
