Don't Fret For The Yellow Jackets

Yellow Jacket football time is just around the corner and what a great year lies ahead for the LHS partisans this year.
With a bright new look in the uniform department plus a new fresh look in schedule, all that Coach Lofton needs now is sixteen members of the Kansas City Chiefs, plus six L.A. Rams and four Minnesota Vikings to make the year a sure fire perfect success.
After a great year last time around, it is hard for any coach to follow with a suitable encore, but we don't think that LHS coach Wilbur Lofton, will really have much difficulty in fielding a very competitive ball club this time, either. He may not have personnel like we mentioned above, but the Jackets have some very talented football players and the biggest weakness that we anticipate from the Jackets this year is in the depth department. At several positions the Jackets appear thin in experienced hands but their front line on offense and defense should be the match of any in the area.
After a glorious season last year when they finished as the Class A Runnerup, losing to Tampa Blake in the championship clash at Tampa Stadium, it loomed as if the Jackets would be in serious trouble over the loss of some quality senior players. While they did indeed lose some outstanding members of last year's squad, they found more than adequate replacements during their spring drills.
Two of the most prominent losses were at the heart of the offense, including quarterback Mike Napier, and flanker Greg Williams. This super twosome accounted for many yards of aerial offense last season and both are college-bound via football scholarships this fall. Napier is heading to Memphis State and Williams is bound for Southern University in Baton Rouge, La.
Even in the face of losses such as these, don't despair. There are troops being brought up from the rear that may even surpass the exploits of the two graduated stars.
With a fine looking quarterback prospect in Andy Carlton, Coach Lofton may have the finest passer in the state under his wing. Only a junior, Carlton has the picture perfect passing style and should be a real standout field general before he departs the LHS campus.
Another outstanding looking prospect that enjoyed a sparkling spring practice is Tommy Ryan, a big sturdy running back.
Possessing great strength and good speed, Ryan should be a hard-to-handle offensive threat for the Jackets this year.
Possibly the finest pair of tackles on any one team belong to Jackets this year. Super-size Greg Johnson and hard-nosed Lynn Gilbert offer solid credentials for all star ranking from their line positions, and both boys offer firm anchors for solidifying the Jackets line.
With all this talent around, Coach Lofton will find out how realistic the spring drills actually were when the Jackets begin their 1970 regular season drills next Monday morning. All varsity candidates are due to hit the practice field that day and two-a-day sessions are planned until the squad rounds into shape.
Physicals will be offered to all boys planning on turning out for the basketball and football teams as Leesburg High this year, and they will be given free of charge on Friday night at 7 p.m. in the Gym Four doctors have donated their time to conduct the examinations and everyone expecting to play either varsity or junior varsity sports is urged to take advantage of the free physicals. The doctors will be available only the one night any physical given there after will be charged the regular price of an office call.
The 1970 Yellow Jacket schedule has been released and a couple of new teams are on the slate this year.
The season opens on September 25 against DeLand at home. Six home games are scheduled and no games are over 50 miles from the Jackets home field.
Season tickets rates are being mailed by the office of Athletic Director Earl Burt to previous season ticket holders and this year it is a real bargain because of the large number of home games available. The price of the seasons ticket is only $10.50 for the six games and that is a three dollar savings over the price of the gate admission. The season ticket always insures the holder of a guaranteed good seat at every game.
Student season tickets are available for only $5, and this covers every sports event for the year at LHS. This is a savings of over $15 if figured over the full year's program.
Anyone interested in reserving their seats for the new season should make their checks payable to Leesburg Senior High School and should contact the Athletic Directors office at 787-5223, anytime after 11:30 a.m. Previous seasons ticket holders can be assured of their old seats until the deadline of Sept.11, at which time they will be offered to the general public.
The 1970 schedule for the Jackets will find them opening their season with DeLand on Sept.25 (H); Osceola of Kisssimmee on Oct. 2; (T); Lake Wales on Oct.9, (H); Apopka on Oct. 16, (H); Lakeview on Oct 23, (T); Ocala-Vanguard on Oct. 30, (H) Eustis on Nov. 6; (H) New Smyrna Beach on Nov. 13, (H); Seminole on Nov. 20, (T); Ocala-Forest on Nov. 25 (Wed.) (H)
