Leesburg In Top Game, November 1953

MELBOURNE - Leesburg and Melbourne, two clubs with unblemished records against Orange
Belt Conference foes, collide here tonight in the loop's top contest of the week.

The visiting Yellow Jackets, after rocking Inverness in the opener, dumped defending champion Apopka in the next start to establish themselves as title contenders. Last Friday, however, Sanford came from behind to administer A 13-7 defeat to Coach Ed Stack's club and douse hopes of an undefeated season.

Melbourne, meanwhile, opened with victories over the Boone junior varsity and Lakeview of Winter Garden, blanking both foes. Last week, the Bulldogs' perfect record was also ruined when Vero Beach tripped them, 20-13.

For both clubs tonight's tilt looms large in title plans.

Leesburg has been paced this season by Jimmy Marshall while Freddy Howard and Charles Layne have stood out in the Melbourne backfield.

Blocking and tackling highlighted Melbourne's rain free drills this past week. Don Bice is expected to boost the Bulldogs hopes. His leg injury is okay now.

According to Coach Rick Gillespie there may be some changes in the defensive positions, but the starting line up will consist of John Forsman and Toby Platt, ends; George Nida and Bill Booth. tackles; Bob Groves and Ted Nida, guards; Charles Layne, Fred Howard, Don Bice, and Lyle Lathe, backs.
