Jackets Win Third Conference Game 12 to 6, November 28, 1944

On Line Buck Hart Streaks 43 Yards for the Winning Touchdown

The Leesburg Yellow Jackets before a large Homecoming crowd in DeLand defeated the Bulldogs 12 to 6. The Yellow Jackets came back in good fashion to redeem themselves from the last week's defeat by Ocala 20 to 0.

In the opening few minutes of the first quarter Broadway went over for the first touchdown on a wide end sweep. DeLand came back in the closing minutes of the first quarter with a pass from Tuten to McDonald to tie the score 6-6. Then again in the third quarter Hart, fullback for the Jackets, fumbled the ball, picked it up and went through the middle of the line 43 yards for the winning touchdown.

The first quarter opened with DeLand kicking off to Leesburg. Bennett got the kick on the Leesburg 27 yard line and ran it back up to the 49 yard line. There was a fumble on the first play and DeLand recovered on their own 48 yard line. DeLand tried a line buck and they also fumbled McCammon recovered for Leesburg on DeLand's 47 yard line. With Broadway, Bennett, and Hart running the ball down to the 15 yard line and on a wide end sweep went over for the first touchdown for the Jackets.

McGammon kicked off for the Jackets with Broadway holding the ball. Tuten got the ball for DeLand on their own 29 yard line and ran it back up to the 34 yard line. DeLand made their come back by running four first downs and putting the ball on the Leesburg 18 yard line. Then on a pass from Tuten to McDonald DeLand made their one and only touchdown to tie the score 6-6.

McDonald kicked off for DeLand with Tuten holding the ball. Hart got the ball on the 30 yard line and ran it up to the 36 yard line. The Jackets tried three running plays but couldn't make a first down. Broadway kicked, Tuten got the ball on his own 25 yard line and he was tackled immediately by McCammon and Carlton. The whistle blew for the quarter to end with DeLand in possession of the ball on their own 26 yard line.

The second quarter opened with DeLand trying a wide receiver reverse but was hit hard behind the line of scrimmage by Lyon and Adams. Being unable to make a first down, Tuten was forced to kick out. Broadway got the ball on the 49 yard line and ran it back to the 44, where he was hit hard by two DeLand tacklers. After trying one pass and two running plays, Broadway kicked a long high one which went out of bounds on DeLand's 10 yard line. DeLand lost the ball on downs, after trying four linebucks, on the four yard line. Tuten kicked and Broadway got the ball on his own 41 yard line. The first play, Broadway tried a pass to Carlton but it was intercepted by Tuten who ran the ball back to the Leesburg 31 yard line. On the next play Mahoney, quarterback for the Jackets, intercepted a DeLand pass and ran it back to the 35 yard line. Three plays later, after Hart, Bennett, and Broadway had each run the ball for short gains. The half ended with the ball resting on DeLand's 47 yard line, and the score 6 to 6.

During the half the Leesburg High School Band performed on the field.

The second half opened with McCammon kicking off for Leesburg and Tuten got the ball on the DeLand 31 yard line and ran it back to the 35. They tried three running plays and Tuten kicked out. Broadway got the ball on his own 31 yard line and ran it back to the DeLand 40 yard line. There was an offsides penalty on Leesburg on the first play. Then Hart on a line buck got loose and raced 43 yards for the winning touchdown. Gilchrist's kick was wide and the score was 12 to 6 in favor of Leesburg.

McCannon kicked off for Leesburg. Tuten got the ball on his own 31 yard line. DeLand started a drive and made three first downs. But they were forced to kick. The ball went out of bounds on the Leesburg 10 yard line. On a reverse Bennett got away for 18 yards but it was called back because of a penalty for holding on Leesburg.

This put the ball back on the Leesburg 11 yard line. The Jackets started another long drive but they bogged down on the DeLand 35 yard line. Broadway kicked and the ball went into the end zone. It was automatically brought to the 20 yard line. The quarter ended with the ball of the 20 yard line.

DeLand tried three plays and was forced to kick. Broadway got the ball on the 45 yard line. He was hit hard by two DeLand men, and the ball was knocked out of his hands. Tom McDonald recovered the ball  for DeLand and the Leesburg 35 yard line. After three downs, and unable to make a first down, Tuten kicked and Broadway got the ball on his own 10 yard line. Broadway got away on off tackle play, for 20 yards. After one more play the whistle blew and the game ended with Leesburg on their own 31 yard line and the score 12 to 6.
