CANDLER — Junior quarterback Steve Madden ran 95 yards for one touchdown and passed for another to lead Leesburg High School to a 21-0, season-opening victory over Candler Lake Weir in the rain Friday at Hurricane Field.
Madden finished with 115 yards on eight carries.
Another offensive star was Jon Cannon, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound fullback for Leesburg, who rushed for 143 yards on 25 carries. Kevin Brown rushed for 66 yards, including a 26-yard touchdown run, and caught a 15-yard pass from Madden.
Leesburg's offensive showing came as a pleasant surprise to Coach Gene Foster. The Yellow Jackets' young offensive line had seemed a big question mark.

''This was what I hoped I'd see,'' Foster said. ''We tried running both to the right and left sides, and we were pretty successful either way.''
Foster also was pleased with the performance of Cannon, a potential college player who is the key to Leesburg's rushing attack.
''We had to get big Jon going because teams are going to have to learn to respect him,'' Foster said.
Madden completed each of the three passes he attempted, totaling 34 yards. ''They the Yellow Jackets took control right from the start,'' Lake Weir Coach Alex Castenada said. ''Our game plan was just negated because of the weather.
''They played a good game. They did whatever they wanted to.''
But the wet field suited Leesburg's power game and severely hindered Lake Weir's passing attack Leesburg dominated the first half.
The Yellow Jackets rushed for 225 yards, and Madden threw the 15-yard pass to Brown for a touchdown. The only times the Yellow Jackets were stopped were on a lost fumble and the expiration of the time.

Leesburg's defense forced Lake Weir to punt twice and recovered two Hurricanes fumbles. Lake Weir's total offense was 27 yards. The Hurricanes ran just 16 plays in the half.
The Yellow Jackets, who had the worst defensive rankings of any school in Lake County last year, had an even better second half.
Lake Weir ended the game with only 29 yards of total offense. Leesburg rolled up 363 yards.
''It the defense was outstanding,'' Foster said. ''They were hitting.
''I really think the key was we had 48 young men out there playing with enthusiasm.
''What a way to start. I'm looking for it to rain every Friday night.''
