LEESBURG - Leesburg lost a lot more than its game against New Port Richey Gulf Friday night.
Junior starting quarterback Shawn Cunningham suffered a broken collar bone in the second half of the Yellow Jackets' 33-14 loss against the Bucs and will be sidelined for at least the next six weeks. The right-handed Cunningham broke his left collar bone.
"It's really big," Lesburg coach Ed Hoffman said of losing Cunningham. "We were counting on him to be the quarterback and lead the offense this year."
Hoffman said senior Kenny Thompson, the junior varsity quarterback two years ago, likely will replace Cunningham, At wide receiver last season, Thompson was Cunningham's prime target and led the county with 31 receptions while averagin 10.8 yards per catch.
"We'll regroup and start working on the basics again, working with Kenny at quarterback," Hoffman said. "But I think Kenny can step up and do a good job.
"The offense is going to have to be less directed toward the pass. We'll look to run the ball - with Bishon (Roberts) and (Ky) Littles as good or better than we did Friday night."
Hoffman has far from given up hope for the season.
"I think (the players) realized we can play pretty good football," he said. "The kids responded well at the end. They came out flat at the beginning, but I don't think that'll happen again."
