Leesburg High's Yellow Jackets can do something Friday night, October 3, 1969

Leesburg High's Yellow Jackets can do something Friday night that last year's team couldn't do in an entire year.

In three games, the Yellow Jackets could win more games than last tear's did in ten games. In 1967, the Yellow Jackets 2-7-1. So far this year they are 2-0 and favored Friday night
"IT WOULD BE NICE", says Coach Wilbur Lofton, who feels next year's squad will be even better than the one he has now, "But we haven't won it yet. Kissimmee (this week's opponent) has a real tough team. And we're playing down there.

"Kissimmee is a lot better team than they've shown in their first two games. We know, because we've seen them on film.

"They're bi, probably bigger than us. They don't have anyone the size of Bob Morgan (240 pound tackle-noseman) but they are bigger overall.

"DeLand (last week's foe) was bigger than us. We're really one of the smallest teams in the conference if you take away several of our players."

The Yellow Jackets opened the season with a 19-6 victory over St. Augustine, then took DeLand, 14-7. But in both games the offense didn't really start to go until the final quarter.

"We tried to establish a running game against DeLand and waited too long to start passing," Lofton admits. "We did establish the running attack, though. But we've got to start [passing earlier.

"
MIKE NAPIER IS the finest quarterback I've had since I've been here at Leesburg," Lofton went on. "And Greg Williams, well, his actions speak for themselves."

Napier is hitting on better than 50 percent of his passes and, along with Williams, has been the deciding factor in both contests. Against St. Augustine, the Yellow Jackets were down 19-6 going into the final four minutes of play but Napier hit Williams, a 184-pound speedster, for two touchdowns to put the game away.

Then, against DeLand last week, the score was 7-7 with less than a minute to go when Mike Chatman blocked a punt at the DeLand 12. Napier hit Williams at the 5 on the first play and Williams went in to score.
"Our passing attack is as good as anybody's," Lofton offers, "and our running game is improved to a point that our passing should be even more effective.
"Now that we have an established running game can throw more at the first. That should help our offense move better from the start."

Of Course, we're still making mistakes which hurt. I guess that's normal for this time of year but we hope to correct them so our offense can go."

LAST WEEK, for instance, Williams actually caught four Napier passes for scores, but three were called back by penalties.

But the fact remains that the Yellow Jackets have actually outclassed both opponents thus far, even though the statistics might not reveal it as such. An they have the better team in Friday night's game.

The only problem facing them this week is possible over confidence, looking forward to the game next week with arch rival Wildwood, But Lofton doesn't think so.
"We've seen too much on game films to get over-confident, Lofton states. "The boys haven't been satisfied with their pay. They know they can do better than they have and I think they'll show that Friday night."
Let's hope so. Kissimmee may be 0-2 but the hopes for a successful season rest on how well Leesburg does down in Kissimmee Friday night.
