Honor Roll Sixth Week, October 28, 1969

Quarterback Kenny Joe Nappi has played many fine games for the Leesburg High junior varsity this year, but the Big Game for him was to be this Thursday's when Baby Jackets meet Ocala's JVs.

Ocala junior varsity is coached by Kenny Joe's brother, Mike.

Kenny Joe's been looking forward to it all year.

But...

Last Thursday, as the Baby Jackets were bowing to Sanford JV, 14-0 Kenny Joe dropped back to punt on fourth down. He got the kick away against a hard rush, but the charging Sanford linemen hit him hard, knocked him head over heels after the kick...and broke his leg.

Nappi will be out the rest of this year, probably will play varsity back-up quarterback behind Andy Carlton on the Big Jackets next year, so he'll never get to play big brother Mike.

Despite the rain that made area grandstands a plane of umbrellas, heroes sloshed back and forth in big numbers.

Foremost on offense was Wildwood's Wayne Allen, rushing for 230 yards in 25 carries, three touchdowns, a two-point conversion run-and adding a safety on defense-to account for 22 of the 28 points Wildwood beat Apopka by.

Leesburg's Greg Williams took a short pass from Mike Napier, danced out of a tackle and down the sidelines for  a 75-yard TD, later pulled an almost identical move to leave two defenders standing baffled while he sped 29 yards to set up another Jacket touchdown in a game of few plays but big ones as Leesburg beat Lakeview 21-6.

Pearlie Moore, Eustis fines running back, made an 80-yard TD run, joined Daryl Hampy (who caught a TD pass and shined on defense) as top stars in Eustis' team-effort humiliation of Lake Weir.

Brightest star in the South Sumter defeat of Mount Dora was a Mount Dorian, Melvin Durias, who rushed for 121 yards, all but 26 of his teams' total rushing effort-but the Rebels' Clarence Curtis starred too, scoring the touchdown that won the game with a five-yard sweep.

Quarterback Dennis Warren, an honor roll regular, again was the leader as Umatilla won its fifth game, 28-0 over Oviedo-scoring all four Bulldog touchdowns, one a 75-yard run, one set up by his 67-yard punt return.

Tavares lost its fifth game of the year, but came close behind the play of Harold Hanna and Robert Jones-Hanna completing six passes from halfback one for a touchdown to Steve Issac, and rushing for 75 yards, quarterback Jones scoring a TD on a five-yard run.

Now, defense.

Clermont held Crystal River to six points and 66 yards in the first half before loosening up in the 20-6 loss, and leading that defensive effort were Robert Smith, Randolf Jones and big Jerry Blair.

Lineman Bob Linn had a big hand in Umatilla's victory, recovering a fumble that set up the Bulldog's second touchdown, leading the tough defense and kicking two extra points to boot.

The rugged Wildwood defense that held Apopka to 60 total yards was led by linemen Steve Masters, Edgar Stokes, Craig O'Dell and Vaughn black-with Wayne Allen getting into the picture with a safety when he tackled quarterback David Royer in the end zone.

Eustis' long list of stars included Eddie Prevatt, who led the tackling with seven unassisted and five assists, plus a fumble recovery which set up a touchdown; Daryl Hampy, who intercepted a pass that led to a score; and defenders Don Ball (six unassisted tackles) Jim Tyre and Mike Eldridge.

And, finally, note a Leesburg defense, tough when it had to be, led by Greg Johnson, linebackers Mike Chatman, and Jerome Holman, lineman Tommy Ryan, Jim Mackey, Lynn Gilbert, and David Osborne.
