Jackets Face 1st Big Test, Deland

Like a college freshman who scored high on all the entrance exams, and passed the first pop quiz with an A-but then met the hard realities of the first big test, Leesburg High's Yellow Jackets find out this week if the fall football term is going to be as gloriously easy as all the potential indicates.

The first big Test is Deland High's Bulldogs, an experienced Class AA team, and the Jackets will be meeting them on Deland territory this Friday night.

In other Area games Friday, Wildwood hosts tough Crystal river, Eustis travels to St Cloud, Umatilla goes to Clermont, Mount Dora hosts Tavares, South Sumter plays Citrus in Inverness and Groveland hosts Lake Weir.

The Yellow jackets have cruised so far this year, with impressive performances in the Jamboree at Eustis and the Orange & Black intrasquad game here, and a jolting opening game last week when they beat
St. Augustine 27-0.

But Deland will throw at them a team which includes 26 returning lettermen and some talented youngsters who warmed up by beating Sanford Crooms 33-6 last week.

Leading the Bulldogs is Junior quarterback Rodney Harris, who can throw long and short easily and did both last week when he passed for 244 yards and three touchdowns.

Backing him up is a halfback Reggie Cherry, who scored three touchdowns, on runs of two and seven yards and a 36 yard pass reception from Harris.

Tailback Ken Allen scored another touchdown on a pass from Harris, and is a running threat-though Coach Bill Bradford went to the air most of the time last week, as the Bulldogs rushed for only 127 yards.

The Bulldog defense used Crooms only as a warmup- Crooms hadn't played in a Jamboree or Intrasquad game-but the Bulldogs are weak from injuries to key players. Rick Calkins, a 6'2", 230-pound lineman, is suffering from a bad ankle and won't play. Mike Lane, a running and receiving threat with a toe injury saw only limited action last week and probably won't play much this week.

Against them, the Jackets will throw an offense which was overwhelming against St. Augustine and a defense which couldn't have looked much better. Quarterback Mike Napier and his backup man Andy Carlton lead the Jacket passing attack with tosses to Greg Williams and Sherrill Lackey. A strong running attack has taken form recently, and it erupted for over 300 yards against St. Augustine. Napier, Sam Rixie and Mike Chatman are the backbone on the ground. On defense, Coach Wilbur Lofton will look to Chatman, Rixie, Jim Mackey, Tony Hart, Greg Johnson and the Jacket gang-tacklers who stopped St. Augustine cold last week.
