Almost unnoticed, Wildwood High has slipped back into the running for the District 4 Class B title that another Area school currently leads.
South Sumter, riding along with an 8-1 record, its only loss to Eustis, leads the pack after last Friday, when Dunnellon lost to Turkey Creek, their second loss in a row and second of the season.
But the powerful Wildcats of Wildwood, who made a perfect scrimmage out of last Friday, whenDunnellon lost to Turkey Creek, their second loss in a row and second of the season.
South Sumter plays Zephyrhills Friday. If the Rebels win, they're District 4 Champs. If they lose, Wildwood
would beat South Sumter out on the basis of opponents' records. The Wildcats have played the stronger
schedule, and District ties are broken by the number of victories each team's opponents have recorded.
Dunnellon, sporting a weak early-season schedule but finishing strong, could give the Wildcats a fight on that basis. But Dunnellon finishes against Cross City, a strong club undefeated until Wildwood beat them,
and a Dunnellon loss would give Wildwood the title.
Zephyrhills will be one of South Sumter's two strong opponents. The Bulldogs are 6-2 and also possess
an outside chance at the title. Losses have been to Dade City and Mulberry.
Familiar faces dominated the Honor Roll in its last weeks.
On offense Leesburg's Mike Napier and Greg Williams repeat for their performances against Ocala in a
34-7 Yellow Jacket victory.
Wildwood's Wayne Allen, who's been on just about every honor roll, is here again for the leading offensive performance in the Wildcats' thundering offensive show at Citrus, 78-0, and he's joined by Elijah Jackson and Dale Nichols.
Rick Day repeats for Eustis, joined by Jerry Shaw, for their parts in the Panther's 33-0 victory over Clermont.
And Harold Hanna is back for leading Tavares to its second victory of the season, 14-2 over Hawthorne.
Napier put on a dual performance against Ocala. The flashy senior quarterback passed for 148 yards, including two touchdowns, and ran for 181 yards in 11 carries, and two more touchdowns. One of those was a 97-yarder, the longest touchdown of the year in Area football.
Williams kept alive his record of scoring one or more touchdowns in every game the Jackets have played
this year - and the one he scored Friday was a big one that broke open a tight game. It was another of his specials, a short sideline pass from Napier which Williams caught in traffic then faked and danced his way free for 79 yards and the TD. He caught three others during the night to set up other Jackets scores, and ended with 129 yards.
Allen, just a Junior but firmly established as the best running back around, maybe in all of the stat's Class
B schools, perhaps - you could argue the point well - the universe, gained 260 yards and scored four touchdowns against hapless Citrus. He added defensive luster with two interceptions, numberous tackles.
Nicholes, Wildwood's fine junior quarterback, passed the 1,000-mark in passing yardage against Citrus
while tossing for one touchdown, which jackson caught and ran with for a 47-yard score.
Day completed 10 of 15 passes to take Eustis back to its familiar winning ways, adding up 178 yards and
two touchdowns. Shaw caught two of them and scored a touchdown with one, and led all rushers with 101 yards in seven carries.
Hanna rushed for 120 yards - all but 52 of Tavares total - and scored both of the Bulldogs' touchdowns.
Greg Johnson, Don Ball, John Boslicker, and Elijah Jackson joined Allen as a standout in Wildwood's
vicious defense. A fine end on offense, Jackson intercepted two passes which set up Wildcat scores.
