.....Apparently having caught the cold virus that is circulating around the area lately, I am still under the influence of cold pills, conjection pills, asthma pills and a few sniffers of my favorite virus beverage, so we came up with these quips in between blowing the nose and coughing.
To start off with we behove the best of luck upon the Leesburg Yellow jackets Friday night as they travel to Belle Glade in their second encounter of three to capture the State Class A football title. Incidentally, one of the biggest pushers behind the Jackets this year is the now gone sports editor John Bowman, currently in Ocala, who picked the Jackets to win the Class A title as far back as last December at the first Annual All-Area Banquet.
This brings up another, wanted to know when subject, on the All-Area team. It will be announced following the final play-off game. Things can be promised to the winners, of another superb time and a possible surprise speaker.
Area basketball is now underway, as several teams began Tuesday night with locals Mt. Dora, Groveland and Clermont pulling off their first victory of the new year.
Some games will be played Friday night, but the majority of the Area's teams are scheduled to began Tuesday night. Teams in the area are predominately strong this year with the likes of Groveland high with all five of their starters from last year back. Wildwood with the number one scorer in the area in Wayne Allen. Groveland slipped past Wildwood Tuesday night, 74-48 behind Donnie Wilson's 21 points.
Tavares high behind All-Conference forward Greg Duncan who tossed in 22 points, swept past Florida Military 86-42. Mount Dora, one of the Area's strongest last year, squeaked one by Palatka Central Academy, 53-45, with Jeff Cox getting a game high 15 points. James Pendergrass and Clermont began the season with a big victory over Winter Garden Lakeview, 61-55, with Pendergrass getting 19 points.
Eustis High will be a strong contender for top honors this year as they have the likes of Rick Day and Kenny Austin to go along with five other seasoned veterans. The basketball season is upon us fans so go out and support your local team.
A small thing in the offering is that the defending District Five champs Wymore Tech began their season out with a 53-44 win over a Class AA powerhouse Coca five. Lookout area teams, here come the BOBCATS.
The All-Region Class B -B team was announced this week with several area boys making the squad. Eustis High led the area with two boys making the first team. Don Ball and Rick Day made the team on defense with honorable mention going to Bill Livingston and Pearlie Moore, Melvin Durias from Mount Dora was on the offensive 11, with James Blair of Clermont making it as a defensive tackle. Other honorable mentions were Harold Hanna, Tavares, Teddy Pederson and Gary Bauknight of Groveland and James Pendergrass of Clermont rounding out the area selections.
The boys that make the first team on either offense or defense are eligible for the All-State team that will be announced later.
