University School’s football team will take to the national stage next season.
The Suns found out this week they will open the schedule in Ohio against Trotwood Madison High during the weekend of August 24-25.

The game will be nationally televised on one of the ESPN networks – a first for University School – and is part of the ESPN High School Kickoff Classic Weekend.

University, a state runner-up in 2010 and regional finalist in 2011, has compiled a 24-2 record over that span. Madison went 15-0 last season and won a state championship in Ohio’s Division II bracket. Madison finished ranked No. 40 nationally by ESPNHS.

In addition to the out-of-state opener, the Suns have revamped their schedule.

Harriott said University will also play at Cocoa (Class 4A state semifinalist last season) Sept. 14, at Port St. Lucie Treasure Coast Sept. 21, at Leesburg Oct. 12, and Fort Myers Dunbar (Class 4A regional finalist) Nov. 9. The Suns will also host Miami Edison on Oct. 25, and Jacksonville Eagles’ View (Class 2A reg. finalist) on Nov. 3.

With several teams in District 8-3A opting to go independent, University’s only district opponents will be Chaminade (Oct. 4), Miami Archbishop Carroll (Sept. 7) and Miami Westminster Christian (Oct. 19).

“This will be a major step for the development of our program because of the kind of exposure it gives our school and our athletes,” University coach Roger Harriott said. “I think putting a challenging schedule together like this will help us tremendously so we are ready come playoff time to compete for a state championship.”
