LEESBURG
-- Throughout his high school career, Jermaine Orr was pretty much
anything Leesburg High School's football team wanted him to be. Early
on, the Yellow Jackets needed him to play receiver and defensive back. Then, as a senior, they needed him to play quarterback and defensive back.
Meanwhile, he was one of the most exciting and dangerous return men to ever play in Lake and Sumter counties.
Now, Orr will be taking all those talents to Tusculum College
in Greenville, Tenn. He signed with the Pioneers, a NCAA Division II
program that plays in the South Atlantic Conference, Thursday morning.
"I just made the biggest decision of my life,'' Orr said after
signing. "They recruited me for receiver, but the coaches said I could
be used as a safety and I will be back there returning punts.''
Orr, 5 feet 11, 170 pounds and 4.4-second speed
in the 40 yards, made the Orlando Sentinel's All-County first team as a
defensive back last fall and as a receiver as a junior. In a break-out
junior season, he returned four punts for touchdowns, had five touchdown
receptions and returned four of six interceptions for touchdowns.
Orr, who visited the school
last month and was impressed with the indoor practice facility, will be
following in the footsteps of Leesburg's offensive line coach Adam
Bryie, who played center for the Pioneers.
"His motor goes
non-stop,'' said former Leesburg Coach Bud O'Hara, who was hired in
March as the coach at new East Ridge High School in Clermont. "He is one
of the hardest practicing kids we have ever had. He is also the kind of
kid where he has never met a stranger, so he will fit in there very
quickly.''
