LEESBURG 21, TAVARES 10
TAVARES --The visiting Leesburg Yellow Jackets took the steam out of Tavares on Friday, downing the Bulldogs 21-10 in front of a capacity crowd at Dr. Argin A. Boggus Stadium.
The nondistrict season opener for both squads was a story of big plays. Despite being outgamed between the chains throughout the contest, Leesburg's special teams struck when it mattered to deflate the Bulldogs.
Senior wideout Matt Shepherd came up big for the Jackets. With the Jackets down 10-7 late in the third quarter, Shepherd streaked up the right sideline untouched for a 62-yard punt-return score that put Leesburg up 14-10.
He iced the victory in the fourth quarter, finding the end zone again on a 55-yard touchdown run off the option from Leesburg quarterback Rod Cosgrove.
Shepherd enjoys the chemistry he shares with his signal-caller.
"We've been playing together since youth football. We're really starting to click. We kept fighting together, and we did a lot of growing up tonight," Shepherd said.
Leesburg coach Charles Nassar praised his team's resiliency.
"We never take a play off," he said. "Tavares has a great defense. That's why we practice three phases of the game. We won tonight on special teams and defense."
