Omaha erupted for 23 points in the second quarter and 21 in the
fourth. The Beef ended up needing every one of them as Omaha outlasted
winless Wyoming 54-52 in IFL action Saturday at the Civic Auditorium.
The
teams traded blows all night in a game featuring five lead changes,
plenty of offense and the defensive lapses that helped create that
offense.
Beef defensive back Cortney Grixby left the game in the second quarter with an undetermined injury and didn't return.
Omaha coach Bruce Cowdrey said his young corps of defensive backs was not up to task of filling Grixby's shoes.
“When
we lost Grixby in the secondary, we lost our veteran leadership out
there,” Cowdrey said. “That was one of the worst defensive games we've
ever played. The rookies didn't play well, and they've got to do that.”
Omaha's James McNear completed 23 of 28 passes for 253 yards and five touchdowns.
Omaha
trailed 6-3 after the first quarter until a big play by Grixby, who
returned a missed field goal 54 yards to give Omaha its first lead at
10-6.
Kwaheem Smith, who had three interceptions in the first half
of Omaha's season opener two weeks ago, added another as he picked off
former Chadron State player Matt Strand on the next play from scrimmage
to set up the Beef at the Cavalry 11.
McNear struck quickly for
Omaha, hooking up with Tory Harrison on the next play for an 11-yard
score to give the Beef a 16-6 lead.
Wyoming drew within a point,
26-25, on its opening possession of the third quarter when Strand
tallied his third touchdown pass of the game, 13 yards to Jasonus
Tillery.
Holding a 40-38 lead, McNear drove Omaha 45 yards in
three plays, hitting Alan Burrell with an 18-yard touchdown pass to give
the Beef a 47-38 lead with 1:56 left.
A 33-yard touchdown run by
Harrison made it 54-45 Omaha with 50 seconds remaining, but left enough
time for Strand to complete an 11-yard TD pass to LaVaughn Macon to draw
back to 54-52.
“What do you do? Tell a kid not to score? I mean (Harrison's) going to score. He ran hard all night,” Cowdrey said
Omaha (2-1) takes on the Green Bay Blizzard next Saturday, followed by a second meeting with the Wichita Wild on April 6.
