Wayne Hamilton: A 'Tribute to Wayne', May 7, 1980

The Morrison United Methodist Church Youth Center at 1005 W. Main St. will be the site of the "Tribute to Wayne Hamilton" night on May 17 at 7 p.m.

Leesburg high Athletic Director Hubert Dabney is organizing the night as a tribute to Hamilton, who was chosen in the sixth round (26th pick) by the San Diego Chargers of the American Football Conference.

Relatives from around the United States and friends will be present to make speeches about and for Wayne, a former Standout on the Leesburg Yellow Jacket football team.

Hamilton played college ball for the University of Alabama under Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant for the past four years, and was selected as a Southeastern conference Academic All-American in his junior year as well as being named to the second team of the All-American Squad.

Also accompanying Wayne according to Dabney will be eight or 10 members of this past season's Crimson Tide, including two top draft picks of the Miami Dolphins.

Hamilton currently is in San Diego, according to members of his family, who reside in Okahumpka. But he should be returning to Leesburg sometime this weekend.

Dabney said that Coach Bryant may try to attend the Special night for Wayne, but no definite plans have been made.

A highlight of the night will be the showing of films of Wayne's career at Alabama. Included in the films will be the showing of films of Wayne's career at Alabama. Included in the films will be the classic games between the Tide and the University of Southern California.

It was in the televised game that Wayne, as a Sophomore, was voted the most outstanding defensive player and a $1,000 Scholarship was awarded in his name. He blocked a pass on an extra point try that gave the Tide a 21-20 win and also intercepted a pass from his defensive end position to seal the victory.
