Matt Shepherd: MORE GRIDIRON RECORDS? December 12, 2009

#1 Matthew Shepherd Monmouth College
Yep, a school-record five members of the football team were named last week to the D3football.com All-West Region team.

Quarterback Alex Tanney led the nation with 3,856 passing yards and is the Scots’ lone first team selection. His 10,158 career passing yards shattered the school record. The junior was named to the All-West team for the second consecutive year.

Wide receiver Matt Shepherd (Leesburg, Fla./Leesburg) was named to the second team offense. Earning all-region status for the first time, the junior became the first receiver in Fighting Scots’ history to record more than 1,000 yards in a season. As a return man, his 1,881 total runback yards ties him for the career record with Evan Haffner, who earned all-region selections in 2005 and 2006.

Two senior offensive linemen were named to the third team unit. Right guard Josh Kotecki (Peru, Ill./LaSalle-Peru) and left tackle Dan Schwindenhammer (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame) each earned their second consecutive all-region honor. The Scots generated nearly 528 yards of total offense per game, ranking them second in Division III. Scoring more than 45 points per game ranks them third in that category. Monmouth also converted 52 percent of their third downs.

Senior defensive end Anthony Goranson (Bartlett, Ill./Belvidere) was selected to the defensive all-region team for the second time. A third teamer, Goranson led the Scots with 21 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks. He finished his career with 32.5 sacks, second all-time among Monmouth defenders. His 56 tackles this season included 34 solos.

The D3football.com All-West Region teams were selected from more than 150 nominations and voted on by the region’s sports information directors and D3football.com staff. The Web site’s All-American team will be announced on Dec. 19 prior to the Division III national championship game in Salem, Va.
