TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - If you didn't get fired up for this game, you didn't have much inside you," said Alabama defensive end Wayne Hamilton, who was stoked up enough to preserve a victory over Southern Cal.

The situation if anyone needs reminding: Southern Cal ranked No.1 in the nation at time, had scored twice to trim No.7 Alabama's lead to 21-20 and there was no doubt the Trojans would try a two point conversion play.

Quarterback Rob Hertel ran to right to pass but Hamilton, 6-foot-5, 228 pound sophomore, got to him and forced the pass to go awry. Alabama had its upset.

"I just tried to get into the passer", Hamilton said. "Somebody tried to block me but I beat him. I just had it in my mind that I could determine whether we won the national championship or not. I wasn't nervous about it. I just went at it because it was what we do."

That was not all Hamilton did in the game. He intercepted a deflected pass near Southern Cal's goal to set up Alabama's third touchdown. He made seven tackles and was in on five others.

His work earned him Associated Press Lineman of the Week honors for the southeast.

"Our defense was very tired because we were out there a long time," Hamilton said, "But you've got to play every down like it your last one."

On the two point conversion try, Hamilton said "My job was to take off and make something happen."

Hamilton had recovered two fumbles in Alabama's 18-10 win over Georgia the week before but Coach Bear Bryant said the Southern Cal contest "was by far his best game. He has some big plays at important times in the game."

Other lineman with fine performances Saturday was Ron Simmons, Roger Overby and David Hanks of Florida State, Don Latimer of Miami, Micheal Dupree, Charlie Williams, Scott Brantley, Scott Hutchinson, and Melvin Flournoy of Florida
