Running back Dan Oliver and defensive end Wayne Hamilton of Leesburg High have been named first team to the Class AAA All-State team, which was released Saturday.

Oliver and Hamilton joined six Ocala Forest players on the first unit, giving the Big Sun Conference eight first team Representatives on the first three teams with Forest having eight, Leesburg and Vanguard two each and Gainesville Eastside and North Marion one apiece. And you wonder why they say the Big Sun Conference is the strongest AAA conference in the state?

Oliver became the first back in Big Sun Conference history to gain over 1000 yards in consecutive seasons, getting 1054 as a junior and 1059, as a senior despite the fact that defenses stacked against him. Hamilton was a terror on the defensive line and often spent as much time in opposing team's backfields as their running backs.

On the first team from Forest are Scot Brantley, Phil Pharr, Thomas Jefferson, Eddie Mobley, Russell Kirk and Harold Franklin. Forest's Greg Futch made the second team as did Eastside's Vernon James and Vanguards Donnie Hopkins and North Marion's Ernest Gordon.

Leesburg's offensive tackle Jim Skuthan made honorable mention as did Lake Weir's Sam Franklin, Forest's Charlie Davis, Vanguards's Darryl Stafford, North Marion's Herbert Wilkerson, Forest's Okie Lanier.

No other conference or area came even close to matching the Big Sun Conference in representation on the all-state team.
