The Leesburg Yellow Jackets put together sustained drives in the first and second periods and turned two defensive gems into TD's in the final period to turn back a determined Maynard Evans eleven at Memorial Field Friday night 27-6.

The Yellow Jackets moved with opening kickoff from their own 40 with a succession of two first downs combined with a 26 yard jaunt by halfback Randy Brown into pay dirt to rack up their first score of the night. Their defensive 11 was immediately called on to stoop a deep thrust by the visitors and came through in grand style, stopping the Green and White wave from Orlando inside the 20.

The teams exchanged punts for most of the rest of the first period with the Jackets putting together another drive as the quarter ended that carried them to the visitors 30. Halfback Brown once more ate up a big hunk of real estate with a 43 yard gallop. The Jackets second score came following a short kick by the visitors and the locals moved from midfield to a first down inside the 10. A Brown to Lynn Bates pass set up the TD at his point, with Brown going over from two yards out.

Maynard Evans opened the second half just as if they were going to take charge and moved for a TD from midfield with two passes that clicked for 10 and 28 yards to give them a first and goal on the 10 yard line. Three plays later halfback Joe Kirkpatrick carried over from four yards out. Their extra point try was blocked by a hard charging Jacket line led by end James Walker.

Late in the final period the Jackets cranked up their offense once more when a short kick by the visitors gave them the ball on the 26 yard line. Two first downs and they were at the five. Quarterback Johnny Ward worked the keeper play to perfection to cross the double stripe standing up.

In the closing minutes of the ballgame the visitors were once more hammering on the Jackets goal line when defensive middle guard Mike Sheets stepped in front of one of their aerials on his own 10 yard line and went the 90 yards necessary for the score with plenty of downfield blocking to shake him loose.

Victory was sweet for the Yellow Jackets as both their offensive and defensive units worked to perfection. There were times when their offensive seem to be lacking, but their defensive eleven left nothing to be desired. Standouts with the defensive squad were ends Joe Heath, James Walker, and Gerald Fletcher, along with capt. Ken Ferguson, and of course, the play that ended it all and brought the crowd to its feet by Mike Sheets.

The Jackets will close out their regular season next week in an away game against arch rival Eustis.
