Harakal Named Defensive Coordinator At Thiel College, January 16, 2012

GREENVILLE, Pa. – Thiel College has announced the return of John Harakal as the football program's new defensive coordinator.

“I am very excited to have the opportunity to come back to Thiel and get our football program back on top of the Presidents' Athletic Conference,” said Harakal.

Harakal spent both the 2010 and 2011 seasons as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for head coach Randy Trivers at Leesburg High School, one of seven public high schools located in Lake County, Florida.

Prior to his time at Leesburg Harakal spent three seasons in a variety of positions with the Rutgers University football program. Under Scarlet Knights head coach Greg Schiano, Harakal served as the assistant defensive line coach during the 2009 season, where he was responsible for coaching the defensive ends along with overseeing the quality control staff and playing a role in the recruitment of student-athletes.

After completing a stellar four-year career as a Tomcat fullback and earning his bachelor's degree in history from Thiel in 2002, Harakal began his coaching career under then head football coach
Jack Leipheimer in the fall of 2002 as the Tomcat's assistant defensive line coach where he was instrumental in establishing the Tomcats' off-season weight training program.

“We are excited to have John back with us at Thiel. He did a great job early in his coaching career here when he coached our defensive line. I am confident with the experience he has gained over the last several years that he will make a great addition to our staff as our defensive coordinator. John will bring a great deal of energy and intensity to our defense that will need to improve for next season,” said Tomcat head coach Kurt Reiser.
