EAST MANATEE -- Curt Bradley has been hired as the new head football coach at Braden River High School.

The defensive coordinator at Leesburg High the past two years and former assistant coach at Syracuse University, Bradley was an easy choice, according to Braden River Athletic Director Bob Bowling.

"We wanted somebody who was disciplined, and we liked the way he carries himself," Bowling said. "I think we talked to enough people. We had more than 40 applicants and brought in eight for interviews. He stood out."

Bradley, who turns 27 in June, is the son of former major-leaguer Phil Bradley, who played with Seattle, Baltimore and Philadelphia.

Curt Bradley played football at Northern Iowa and was a 33rd-round draft choice of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2006 as an outfielder. He gave up baseball to concentrate on football. This will be his first head coaching job.

"I am excited about the position and looking forward to meeting the kids," Bradley said. "I was contacted last Friday, interviewed Tuesday, and they called me back into town today and offered me the job this morning. I am not married, but I will be married to this football program."
