Leesburg's Hunt Commits To Play For Cincinnati, January 3, 1996

LEESBURG — Ashley Hunt knew he would have the chance to play college football somewhere next year. The question was where?

Did he want the military life that The Citadel offered? Did he want to play games in the Southeastern Conference, close to home, like the schedule South Carolina plays?

Or, did he want to go to the University of Cincinnati, a school that often runs double tight end and sometimes triple tight end sets and throws to its tight end 90 times a season?

For Hunt, the starting tight end at Leesburg High School the past two years, the choice was obvious - Cincinnati. Hunt, 6 feet 5 and 220 pounds, has orally committed to the Bearcats and is expected to sign with them on NCAA National Signing Day, Feb. 7.

Hunt, who has already been cleared academically by the NCAA Clearinghouse, was told he was on the top of the list of high school tight ends the Bearcats were pursuing.

''The tight end gets about 90 balls a year,'' said Hunt, who is also the center on Leesburg's basketball team, which is off to a 9-2 start. ''Last year, they didn't throw that much to the tight end because they told me they had some problems and ended up moving a tackle out there.

''They have a junior college transfer coming in, but they told me they wanted me to come in first.''

Ashley and his father, Freddie, visited Cincinnati three weeks ago and both liked what they saw. In addition, defensive line coach Greg Karpinsky, who handles Florida recruiting for the Bearcats has met twice with Hunt, including a meeting Tuesday afternoon.

Cincinnati's head coach is Notre Dame's former defensive coordinator, Rick Minter.

''They have a great coaching staff,'' said Ashley, who has 4.7-second speed in the 40. ''Their head coach was at Notre Dame, and some of their other coaches are also from there and I liked the area.''

Freddie Hunt also is pleased with his son's choice.

''I'm happy,'' Freddie said. ''Academically, it is a good school. We talked to everyone while we were up there - the athletic director, the academic advisor.

''They were recruiting him as a tight end, and the recruiter told him they throw the ball a lot to the tight end and use three tight end sets a lot. That is where he wanted to play.''

Hunt, who was a second-team All-County player for The Lake Sentinel, had 22 receptions for 224 yards in nine games for a team that lost its starting quarterback before the season because of a broken collarbone.

Though most of Hunt's receptions came on short pass plays, he impressed the Cincinnati coaches with his desire.

''He (Minter) said he watched the game films, and he liked the way I competed,'' Ashley said. ''He said it looked like I had pretty good hands.''
