Bubba Pratt, former Leesburg Yellow Jacket football star, was chosen Player of the Week by Florida football coaches, along with two teammates. The coaches made the decision after evaluating films from last Saturday's 7-7 tie with Georgia Tech.
The senior defensive end, in his first game since coming off elbow surgery was commended for his fine play on special teams. His 6-foot, 209-pound frame "was all over the field," according to release.
In addition to making some fine tackles, Pratt also downed a Bill Conover punt deep in Tech territory, on the 5-yard line.
It was only 15 minutes after the game Saturday that Pratt praised Coach Charley Pell and the rest of his staff. Ironically, during his assessment of the coaching, Pell came up to Bubba, patted him on the back, and said quietly, but sincerely, "God bless you," And Bubba responded with an equally sincere and polite, "Thank you coach".
"I tell ya," says Bubba, "I can't say enough about Coach Pell and his staff. They're just super individuals. It's like we've got somebody behind us," he says of the staff, as well as the 60,313 fans who turned out for the home opener, Pell's debut at Florida Field.
Bubba is hoping that those same 60 odd thousand, along with a few others, will stick with the team through the long year and the tough schedule, rated by the NCAA as the second toughest in the nation.
The Gators will also have to acquire a consistency in the offense and defensive game if they are going to be winners. "I feel that's one step we've overcome," says Pratt. "It's the fact that our offensive and defensive game has come together. We're a solid unit now."
Those were Bubba's words before he knew that All American linebacker Scott Brantley would end his beloved career as football player due to a history of head injuries, the latest of which occurred against Tech. Bubba knows what an injury can do for an opposing team just coming back after elbow surgery himself.
"Anytime you get hurt," says Pratt. "It gives the other team that much more of an advantage."
