YELLOW JACKET RECAP 1971

Leesburg's Yellow Jackets finished 8-2, while Haines City ended 9-0-1 to get into Friday's Region Three AAA football title game in Auburndale.

Wilbur Lofton's team won its first seven then split its last four games. For the season, Leesburg outscored its opponents 212-99 and recorded four shutouts.

The Hornets were the better scoring team, totalling 330 points and averaging a little better that five touchdowns a start. They allowed 74 points and had three shutouts. In seven games they allowed one or less TDs.

The teams had two common opponents. Haines City beat Osceola 41-3, while the Jackets beat the Kowboys 36-20.  The Hornets topped Lake Wales 29-8, while the Jacket winning margin was 14-6.

FIRST WEEK
Leesburg opened with a 38-0 win against Ocoee as Andy Carlton threw for 18 completions, 234 yards and three TDs. Jim Busby, Marvin King and Tim Wesley caught the TD passes, while Haywood Richardson and LaVelle Rixie scored the other touchdowns.

HAINES CITY 41, OSCEOLA 3

SECOND WEEK
The jackets edged Deland 14-13 with a strong second half defensive effort. Wesley's 16-yard pass from Carlton and Richardson's conversion run were the deciding points in the final period. Jim Busby broke his collarbone.

HAINES CITY 48, AUBURNDALE 12

THIRD WEEK
Leesburg fell behind at the start of the third period but rallied to beat Osceola 36-20. Carlton threw four TDs, including three after the Jackets trailed at the beginning of the second half. He ended with 295 yards passing.

HAINES CITY 28, MULBERRY 20

FOURTH WEEK
The Jackets beat Lake Wales, 14-6, but were not impressive in doing so. Leon Scott went 64 yards with a blocked field goal but Lake Wales tied the score by halftime. Richardson's 25 yard run in the fourth period was the deciding score.

Haines City 30, Bartow 0

FIFTH WEEK     
Leesburg's defense held Apopka to 15 yards rushing as the Jackets scored a 22-0 victory. Wesley caught two Carlton TD passes as the Jackets made 301 offensive yards Carlton ran for the other score.

Haines City 21, Winter Haven 21

SIXTH WEEK
Leesburg scored all of its points in the first half and defeated Lakeview, 34-6, as Red Devil Johnny Collier took the second half kickoff 96 yards to avert a shutout. All five TDs came on Carlton passes, two going to King and Wesley and one to King The Jackets had 322 yards to 112 for Lakeview.

Haines City 20, Rockledge 6

SEVENTH WEEK
A bomb scare didn't stop the jackets from beating Ocala Vanguard, 12-0. The game was stopped with 6:41 to go in the first half Friday night after an anonymous caller reported a bomb under the press box, and the game resumed from that point Saturday night. King caught a TD pass from Carlton and scored on a one yard run for the Leesburg points.

HAINES CITY 30, SEBRING 0.

EIGHT WEEK
The Jackets lost a 19-0 decision to rival Eustis, also 7-0 going into the game. Leesburg took the opening kickoff but a missed field goal try ended the threat, and the Panthers came back on three TD runs, including an 87-yarder by Pearlie Moore, to win the game.

NINTH WEEK
Leesburg came back from the Eustis loss with a 34-13 win over Oviedo, although the losers gained 222 yards Wesley caught two TDs and Robbie Kilgo one as Leesburg totalled 426.

HAINES CITY 55 PASCO 6

TENTH WEEK
Ocala Forest ran for 299 yards against the Jackets and won, 21-8, as Carlos Green clinched the game with an 80-yard TD in the final quarter Sophomore Roger Holt threw to Wesley for a TD and two-point conversion for the Jacket points.
