Generation Gap Bridged In Football Season, August 6, 1969

In just nine days, area football teams begin taking the field for fall practices, full of vigor and anticipation of the coming season.

It's hard to believe that it's that time again, a time when the generation gap suddenly doesn't exist between father and son. Everyone's talking football, and it ranks a close second to girls in the topic of conversation between men.

The prep football season is even more special. Football season itself began a month ago with the Coaches All-American game, then last weekend got underway even more with the college all-star game and pro exhibitions. But, like we said, the prep season is a little different.

With the high school teams beginning to take the field, Willie Joe Namath won't be the main conversation. The high school stars will be far more important.

If you live in Leesburg, the topic of conversation will be varied. It might be on the passing combination of Mike Napier to Greg Williams, or to the other fine receivers like Sherrill Lackey (who could be the best of all), Theodis Williams and Danny Bradford. Or it could be on the big line, led by sophomore Greg Johnson - now 6-4 225 - and James Mackey. Or maybe it'll be on the questionable running attack, or the new 210-pound guard that's moved into town. Or maybe the topic will be Sam Rixie, possibly the finest linebacker in the state, or his opposite, Mike Chatman.
