Although one of the Leesburg Yellow Jackets was on the Florida Sports Writers Association Class 4A All-State Football team Thursday the Leesburg Coaches weren't exactly thrilled with the news.

Ryan Taylor, a highly recruited 6-5, 255-pound offensive tackle, was named to the third team on offense. But Leesburg coaches were hoping he'd be on the first team.

"We're happy for him", said Tracy Sherrod, Leesburg Offensive line coach. "We were hoping he'd come out a lot higher, but you have a lot of excellent people in front of you. It's not as high as we thought, but I don't think it's a let down"

Taylor a senior, shouldn't be hurt in recruiting by the lower ranking. He's sought after by both the University of Florida and the University of Miami and Wake Forest. "But it's an honor to be on the team. I don't think it does that much. It just looks good on paper when they ask what kind of records you have."

"He has the height and size and finesse," Sherrod added. "Plus, he's got a 3.0 - plus- grade - point - average."

Taylor was the only member of Leesburg to make the team.

The Jackets, who lost the Class 4A-District 7 championship in a Kansas tiebreaker, finished the year at 6-4.

Sherrod added that poor performances in football in the past for Leesburg might have hurt Taylor.

"Right now, it (Leesburg) isn't known for football: I hate to say it" Sherrod said. "We're working on it. Hopefully, it will be better next year."
