The Denver Broncos’
third-round draft pick out of North Carolina State, Nate Irving is
facing some heavy competition for even a roster spot in 2012 as the Broncos have brought in four young rookies who will also be competing to secure a spot on the roster.
The
Broncos only draft pick at linebacker was their sixth-round find in
Danny Trevathan (Leesburg High School, Leesburg Florida), however, Fox, Elway and likely Jack Del Rio found some
special talent that went undrafted this year picking up three other
talented players at linebacker: Elliot Coffey (Kentucky), Jerry Franklin
(Arkansas) and Steven Johnson (Kansas).

Danny Trevathan, OLB, Kentucky—Trevathan was a stud on a dud team. Because he didn't play at a traditional powerhouse school, he might not go as high as he deserves. Trevathan made big plays, and four of those were interceptions, just what the Lions need. A linebacker who can cover is very tempting for the Lions at this point in the draft.

Linebackers TIMOTHY COLE of Brenham (Texas) High School, NOOR DAVIS of Leesburg (Fla.) High School, HARDY NICKERSONJR. of Oakland (Calif.) Bishop O'Dowd High School, ROYCE JENKINS-STONE of Detroit Cass Tech and JAMES ROSS of Orchard Lake (Mich.) St. Mary's High School have been selected to play for the 2012 U.S. Under-19 National Team, assembled by USA Football. The team will compete Feb. 1 - National Signing Day - in the third annual International Bowl, formerly Team USA vs. The World.
The International Bowl is sanctioned by International Federation of American Football. IFAF is composed of 62 nations spanning six continents that possess a national federation dedicated solely to American football.

Next Saturday morning, the Leesburg Dad's Club will tackle a job that no one has any heart for but is absolutely necessary. The east section of the Memorial Stadium seats was torn down during the spring, in anticipation of the construction of the new $65,000 concrete section, given tentative approval at the time.
Red tape has been the bugaboo of the project, as it is in so many times situations, and the final financial arrangements could not be made in time for the new football season. The project is still the primary goal of the Dad's Club for the next year and it will mean a very active season on behalf of all club members, making sure that all plans have the green light when the time comes.
Now, that brings us to the problem of putting the old wooden section of bleachers back up in the proper way. It is a small task if enough personnel is on hand to help out and that is what we need right now. Enough help.
With the season opener on September 25 against DeLand at home, the seats have to be fully installed and safety checked before the season can get underway. If you can postpone your golf game or fishing trip for one weekend, come on out next Saturday and give us a hand as we skin our knuckles and mash our fingers, just having a ball putting the stands back in the original order.
Boxing fans in our area will be happy to hear that young Hector McBride, Tampa featherweight and laimant to the State Featherweight title, was named as Ring Magazine's Featherweight Prospect of the Month for September. McBride made two local appearances during the tenure of the Leesburg Boxing Association and the classy fighter impressed everyone round with his style of boxing. Hector also mad several appearances on the Orlando Sports Stadium cards of Pete Ashlock and everywhere the youngster appears he leaves the crowd very pro-Hector McBride when he is finished with his opponent.
McBride will appear in Tampa Monday night in what should be the toughest fight of his 15 bout career, going against Gillermo Benzant, the tall Dominican Republic feather champ. McBride, called the Toy Terrier by the Tampa press, is managed by highly regarded Low Viscusi and trained by wily old veteran, Bill Gore. Both men are the upper echelon of the fight business and both are predicting a championship future for McBride.

Trevathan Has Strongest Linebacker Performance in College Football
Selected by College Football Performance Awards as Nation's Top Linebacker for 2011 Season

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky’s Danny Trevathan has turned in the “strongest linebacker performance” for the 2011 college football season, according to a scientific evaluation by the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA). In a letter notifying Trevathan of the award, CFPA Executive Director Bradley Smith wrote: “The goal of the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) is to provide the most scientifically rigorous conferments in college football. CFPA recognizes weekly, annual, and multi-season (career) award recipients – selected based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams. “After an extensive review of the existing data, literature, and evidence, it was determined that you finished the 2011 season with the strongest linebacker performance in D-I FBS college football. As a result, your performance satisfies the strict criteria CFPA established for recognition. “On behalf of everyone at CFPA -- Assistant Director Harold A. Smith, M.D., Academic Review Chair Paul Studtmann, Ph.D., Associate Director Kyle Mauk, M.D, and academic review associates, including former Science Advisor to President Obama, Lawrence Krauss, Ph.D., please accept our sincerest congratulations.” The CFPA will present Trevathan with a crystal trophy to signify the achievement. "Congratulations to Danny Trevathan, recipient of the 2011 CFPA Linebacker Trophy,” Smith said. “Trevathan earned the honor with his superlative on-field performance, notably in tackling and creating turnovers against strong opponents." Trevathan’s accomplishments during the 2011 season included: • 143 total tackles, ranking fifth in the nation and leading the SEC in tackles for the second-consecutive season • Five fumbles forced, leading the nation’s linebackers in that category • Four pass interceptions, second in the nation among linebackers • In addition, Trevathan had 11.5 tackles for loss, three quarterback sacks, five pass breakups, two quarterback hurries and five fumbles forced. Trevathan, a senior from Leesburg, Fla., ends his UK career ranked 10th all-time on Kentucky’s career tackle list with a total of 374 stops. Trevathan had a total of 20 games with double-figure tackles in his career, including a career-high 17 tackles in 2010 against Auburn, the eventual national champion, and also against Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Georgia.

LEESBURG, Fla. – (December 5, 2011) – Noor Davis, a senior at Leesburg High School, has been honored with the 2011 high school Butkus Award® presented to the nation’s best linebacker by the award’s namesake Dick Butkus in a surprise ceremony at the high school today.
Davis was selected by a panel of 51 coaches, recruiters, scouts and journalists coordinated by Pro Football Weekly. Davis joins Luke Kuechly of Boston College as 2011 Butkus Award honorees. The professional Butkus Award, last year won by Clay Matthews of the Green Bay Packers, will be announced in January 2012. Last year’s high school winner was Tony Steward of St. Augustine, Fla.
“All six high school finalists were extremely worthy choices with Noor Davis emerging from one of the closest votes we’ve ever had,” said Hub Arkush, editor of Pro Football Weekly. “As good a football player as Noor Davis is, he is an even better student and person. He is extremely smart, well-rounded and has endless potential. His big-play ability really stood out the last two years making him the choice among a group of real standouts.”

UPDATE — (1:56 EST) Just minutes ago Davis chose Stanford, proving most of the pundits wrong… and in some cases twice. That said, my final thought probably holds true. Expect this to go down to the wire, with the Irish’s visit to Palo Alto at the end of the season possibly playing a determining factor…
I don’t usually make it a habit of posting on the early press-conferences of a recruiting cycle, but Florida outside linebacker Noor Davis seems like a pretty good exception to the rule.
If there’s a player that’s universally beloved amongst college recruiters, Davis qualifies. He’s got an offer list that rivals anybody’s, quite literally. Thanks to some research done by friend of the program BPH, Davis already has offers from Alabama, Florida, FSU, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and USC. Or as BPH would put it, 9/10th of the golden list of offers — missing only Texas, a school that rarely reaches out of state for players.

LEESBURG - It's official - by next football season, Leesburg High will have a new concrete stadium facility to replace the outdated and inadequate bleachers on the east side of Memorial Field.
There are no ifs anymore - Mack Nigel, engineer at Dura-Stress Concrete, begins drawing up plans next week, and the Leesburg High Stadium Committee, headed by Frank Ezell, is busy now arranging financing.
The facility will seat 3,000 originally, and will be built so expansion to 5,000 is possible later. It will have room underneath for concession stands, rest rooms, shower and gym facilities - all to be added later. It will be built of prestressed concrete, given at cost by Dura-Stress.
Work will begin as soon as possible. The Stadium Committee is aiming for a starting date right after the football season, when the field is no longer in use - or this summer, after school is over.

LEESBURG - Leesburg High School (Leesburg, Florida) linebacker Noor Davis made his last official recruiting visit last weekend when he visited the University of California. Davis verbally committed to Stanford University earlier this year and stands firm on the commitment. Davis has been encouraged by his parents to weigh out all of his options before National Signing day.
Davis has already made official visits to Alabama, Stanford and Auburn this season. An Orange County native, Davis watched the USC Trojans 50-0 shellacking of UCLA Saturday night.
"I wanted to get an inside look at USC," said Davis in a interview with Gerard Martinez of USCFootball.com. "I have tremendous respect for their program and their school. It's always been a great university and very prestigious - a powerhouse. I really wanted to get a closer look.
"I had a chance to spend time with the players and coaches to see how close they are as a team, which is very special. It was a neat set up with the pep rally before each home game and the Trojan Walk. Those things were interesting and very unique to their program.
"They wanted me to get an inside look at the program, so I sat in on all of the meetings and got a close look as if I was a player at USC."
USC has recruited him as a linebacker, while visiting with USC Davis got details on where he would fit in the Trojans defense.
"Yes, they said I could play any one of the three linebacker spots, but they definitely want me on the outside," said Davis to Gerard Martinez . "They feel like I could be a Brian Cushing or Clay Matthews type that could walk up to the line in a 3-4 package and utilize my pass rush abilities."
Traditionally, USC has run a base 4-3 defense, which is the defense Davis played in for head coach Randy Trivers at Leesburg High School. The team's big win over its rival UCLA and the Los Angeles Coliseum's scene had the 2012 Under Armour All-American leaving Los Angeles impressed USC.
"It was a great environment, and a packed house," said Davis. "The fans were very rowdy and into the game. It was a big rivalry game against UCLA and the players reacted very well. It was very intense and they were very focused.
"It showed in the outcome of the game, which was not pretty. I knew USC was a great team and that they were playing for everything because they could not go to a bowl game. So I expected a three to four touchdown win, but not a seven touchdown win."
While on the official visit Davis had a chance to stand on the Los Angeles Coliseum sidelines and speak with fellow four-star linebacker recruits Jabari Ruffin and Scott Starr. With two commits at linebacker for USC, and three freshmen starting at linebacker this season, Davis sees a bright future for the Trojans' defense.
"They're going to have a great team, and they always have been traditionally," said Davis. "I think there's no question that they're going to have success. Not just with Jabari and Scott, but with their team as a whole and their coaching staff. I wish them the best of luck."
Davis still remains firmly committed to Stanford with no sign of changing before National Signing Day.
"USC is a school that would be high on my list, but I am still firmly committed to Stanford," said Davis.
Redshirt freshman linebacker Hayes Pullard was Davis host for the weekend while at USC.
"I enjoy competition, and I'd be willing to work wherever I go including Stanford" said Davis. "USC is a program not afraid to play their freshman and I respect that. They said that if you come in ready, you will play."
Over the next couple of months Davis will take time to analyze his visits and make a final decision on where he will play college football sometime in January.
