Danny Trevathan, OLB, Kentucky—Trevathan was a stud on a dud team.  Because he didn't play at a traditional powerhouse school, he might not go as high as he deserves. Trevathan made big plays, and four of those were interceptions, just what the Lions need.  A linebacker who can cover is very tempting for the Lions at this point in the draft.

As is usually the case, the players get more comfortable around the third day and begin to show a wider range of their talents.

No Luck Needed: Stanford Football Recruiting Keeps Program Winning

While Stanford doesn't have another Andrew Luck on the way, excellent recruiting should keep the Cardinal in contention in the Pac-12.

Jan 3, 2012 - Outsiders might believe the loss of Andrew Luck will put the Cardinal right back in the Pac-12 cellar. The last few recruiting classes, however, should see to it that Stanford doesn't fall quite that far.

 When Jim Harbaugh took over at Stanford, everything changed. Perhaps the most notable chance was in Stanford's recruiting approach, selling itself as an Ivy-type school that plays BCS football. The approach has been more successful than anyone, probably even Harbaugh, could have imagined.

Last year, according to at least one scouting service, Stanford signed 10 players rated as four-stars or better. That's an incredible number.

And with Harbaugh's, and now Luck's, departure to the NFL, the Cardinal keeps on rolling. And that's very impressive given the stringent academic standards players are held to on the farm.

Stanford already has commitments from several top prospects, including six players rated four-stars or higher.

Outside linebacker Noor Davis of Leesburg (Fla.) is perfect for the Cardinal's 3-4 scheme. The 6'4", 235-pound Davis is adept at getting upfield and rushing the passer. He should be able to do so from that position for the Cardinal. Davis is rated four-stars by most services and held offers from every major school in the country.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Noor Davis of Leesburg, Fla., and Noah Spence of Bishop McDevitt (Harrisburg, Pa.) are USA TODAY All-USA First-Team linebackers, the type of recruits Penn State, known as "Linebacker U," once might have landed.

 

But Penn State's recruiting class, already hurting before the child sexual abuse scandal that engulfed it in November, hasn't gotten a commitment from Davis, who's says he plans to sign with Stanford, or Spence, who says he will sign with Ohio State, or for that matter, from any of the recruits at the Under Armour All-America Football Game Thursday in St. Petersburg, Fla.

"There aren't any Penn State commits here, but there are some de-commits here from Penn State," said Davis Tuesday. "I didn't want to go to a school that was amid NCAA allegations or controversy. I want to go and try and win a bowl game, a ring, all four years. So I don't want to be punished for the mistakes of somebody before me. I wanted to go someplace where they wouldn't do something like that and never have, so I wouldn't have to deal with it."

Dad's Club Goes To Work Next Saturday, August 9, 1970

Next Saturday morning, the Leesburg Dad's Club will tackle a job that no one has any heart for but is absolutely necessary. The east section of the Memorial Stadium seats was torn down during the spring, in anticipation of the construction of the new $65,000 concrete section, given tentative approval at the time.

Red tape has been the bugaboo of the project, as it is in so many times situations, and the final financial arrangements could not be made in time for the new football season. The project is still the primary goal of the Dad's Club for the next year and it will mean a very active season on behalf of all club members, making sure that all plans have the green light when the time comes.

Now, that brings us to the problem of putting the old wooden section of bleachers back up in the proper way. It is a small task if enough personnel is on hand to help out and that is what we need right now. Enough help.

With the season opener on September 25 against DeLand at home, the seats have to be fully installed and safety checked before the season can get underway. If you can postpone your golf game or fishing trip for one weekend, come on out next Saturday and give us a hand as we skin our knuckles and mash our fingers, just having a ball putting the stands back in the original order.

Boxing fans in our area will be happy to hear that young Hector McBride, Tampa featherweight and laimant to the State Featherweight title, was named as Ring Magazine's Featherweight Prospect of the Month for September. McBride made two local appearances during the tenure of the Leesburg Boxing Association and the classy fighter impressed everyone round with his style of boxing. Hector also mad several appearances on the Orlando Sports Stadium cards of Pete Ashlock and everywhere the youngster appears he leaves the crowd very pro-Hector McBride when he is finished with his opponent.

McBride will appear in Tampa Monday night in what should be the toughest fight of his 15 bout career, going against Gillermo Benzant, the tall Dominican Republic feather champ. McBride, called the Toy Terrier by the Tampa press, is managed by highly regarded Low Viscusi and trained by wily old veteran, Bill Gore. Both men are the upper echelon of the fight business and both are predicting a championship future for McBride.

Wildcats Honored by Phil Steele's College Football

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Four University of Kentucky football players have been named All-Southeastern Conference performers by Phil Steele's College Football, including senior linebacker Danny Trevathan, who was also named a fourth-team All-American.

On top of the All-America honor, Trevathan was selected as a first-team All-SEC linebacker, while Guy was named second-team defensive back and Warford was named second-team offensive lineman. Tydlacka was tabbed a third-team punter.

A native of Leesburg, Fla., Trevathan made 143 tackles during the season for the Wildcats, leading the SEC in tackles for the second-consecutive season. Trevathan ranked fifth in the nation in tackles with an 11.92 average per game and led the nation's linebackers in fumbles forced (five) and was second among the nation's linebackers in interceptions with four. The senior finished the season with 11.5 tackles for loss, three quarterback sacks, five pass breakups and two quarterback hurries.

Trevathan ends his UK career ranked 10th all-time on Kentucky's career tackle list with a total of 374 stops. Trevathan had a total of 20 games with double-figure tackles in his career, including a career-high 17 tackles in 2010 against Auburn, the eventual national champion, and also against Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Georgia.
