2011 High School Butkus Award winner Noor Davis

LEESBURG, Fla. – (December 5, 2011) – Noor Davis, a senior at Leesburg High School, has been honored with the 2011 high school Butkus Award® presented to the nation’s best linebacker by the award’s namesake Dick Butkus in a surprise ceremony at the high school today.

Davis was selected by a panel of 51 coaches, recruiters, scouts and journalists coordinated by Pro Football Weekly. Davis joins Luke Kuechly of Boston College as 2011 Butkus Award honorees. The professional Butkus Award, last year won by Clay Matthews of the Green Bay Packers, will be announced in January 2012. Last year’s high school winner was Tony Steward of St. Augustine, Fla.

“All six high school finalists were extremely worthy choices with Noor Davis emerging from one of the closest votes we’ve ever had,” said Hub Arkush, editor of Pro Football Weekly. “As good a football player as Noor Davis is, he is an even better student and person. He is extremely smart, well-rounded and has endless potential. His big-play ability really stood out the last two years making him the choice among a group of real standouts.”

UPDATE — (1:56 EST) Just minutes ago Davis chose Stanford, proving most of the pundits wrong… and in some cases twice. That said, my final thought probably holds true. Expect this to go down to the wire, with the Irish’s visit to Palo Alto at the end of the season possibly playing a determining factor…

I don’t usually make it a habit of posting on the early press-conferences of a recruiting cycle, but Florida outside linebacker Noor Davis seems like a pretty good exception to the rule.

If there’s a player that’s universally beloved amongst college recruiters, Davis qualifies. He’s got an offer list that rivals anybody’s, quite literally. Thanks to some research done by friend of the program BPH, Davis already has offers from Alabama, Florida, FSU, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and USC. Or as BPH would put it, 9/10th of the golden list of offers — missing only Texas, a school that rarely reaches out of state for players.

LEESBURG - It's official - by next football season, Leesburg High will have a new concrete stadium facility to replace the outdated and inadequate bleachers on the east side of Memorial Field.

There are no ifs anymore - Mack Nigel, engineer at Dura-Stress Concrete, begins drawing up plans next week, and the Leesburg High Stadium Committee, headed by Frank Ezell, is busy now arranging financing.

The facility will seat 3,000 originally, and will be built so expansion to 5,000 is possible later. It will have room underneath for concession stands, rest rooms, shower and gym facilities - all to be added later. It will be built of prestressed concrete, given at cost by Dura-Stress.

Work will begin as soon as possible. The Stadium Committee is aiming for a starting date right after the football season, when the field is no longer in use - or this summer, after school is over.

Shows up Well In the Spring Practice

Stetson University football fans will see the Hatter gridiron machine in action on the home field in three out of seven games thus far arranged for the 1936 season according to Head Coach Brady Cowell.

In releasing the list of contests for next fall, Cowell said he was still negotiating for an opening encounter October 2 at DeLand against an unnamed opponent. The schedule so far reads:

Oct. 17 - Florida at Gainesville.

Oct. 23 - Tampa at Tampa.

Oct.. 30 - Erskine at DeLand.

Nov. 6 - Miami at Miami.

Nov. 14 (Homecoming) - Union University at DeLand.

Dec. 4 - Rollins at Orlando.

Despite the loss by graduation of fifteen first-string warriors, Coaches Cowell and Chester Freeman expressed themselves as pleased with the showing made by candidates for the 1936 squad during the first three weeks of spring practice.

As a nucleus the Stetson mentors have experienced material in MacCalla and Minehart, center; Nichols and Bridges, tackles; Coombs and Frison, guards; Barber, Cudmore, Haddock and Dickson, ends. In the backfield Branham, Martin and Clonts comprise the most promising material.

From the 1935 freshmen ranks Cowell and Freeman have several likely youngsters for the backfield. Lyndol Warren should prove a mainstay of the passing attack. Lowery, Cobb, W.T. Hall, Jr., and Stewart have also attracted attention in the backfield Kirkland, Swanson, Bob Anderson and Butler are viewed as good line material. Hall is from Leesburg and is making an excellent showing. He will make the varsity barring injuries without a doubt.

Georgia is trying to clinch the SEC East and a spot in the SEC championship game for the fourth time in 11 seasons with coach Mark Richt. Kentucky is looking for back-to-back wins in Athens for the first time in school history after beating the Bulldogs in ’09.

Georgia RB Isaiah Crowell vs. Kentucky linebackers Danny Trevathan and Winston Guy. Trevathan has 118 tackles to lead the SEC, plus four interceptions and three forced fumbles. Guy, listed as a linebacker/safety, has 102 stops. Crowell, a freshman, leads Georgia with 821 yards rushing and five touchdowns.

Leesburg Rocks Apopka Eleven, 21-7, Fall 1953

APOPKA - The Leesburg Yellow Jackets stung Apopka's defending Orange Belt Conference Champions, 21-7, here last night as Vincent Fechtel, Jack Woodard and Ronald Schlosser all made paydirt jaunts.

The lone Blue Darter score was made by Bobby Pitman who changed his style and ran for the points. The Jackets had the initial score. 

Ed Stack's lads grabbed the kickoff and marched to the Apopka nine. There a pass from Bill McLean to end Fechtel got them into the lead. Ray Richardson booted the first of three placements. The Darters came right back with the marker and Pitman added the extra point on a kick.

That was the way it stood at the half, 7-7.

Apopka's tally came when it took the Leesburg kick and Guy Woodum went on a reverse for 32 yards to the Jacket 13. From here Pitman made it to the three and then scroed.

Fourteen big points in the third period made the difference as the clubs went scoreless in the last. Pitman was removed from the game early in the second half on a personal foul and on the Woodard went 49 yards over right tackle for the one that put the winners in front to stay.

A fumble, which Howard Eaton grabbed on the Darter 35, fixed up the last scoring of the game. Woodard went to the 20, Schlosser to the one and then Ron lugged it over on the next play.

Anxious to show off their considerable wares to the home folks tonight, Leesburg's Fighting Yellow Jackets play their annual Orange and Black preseason intrasquad game. The pigskin picnic is one of the main money sources of the Leesburg Dad's Club and kickoff time is slated for 7:30 p.m.

Memorial Stadium is the site of the fund raising activity and the game has the promise of exposing some of the finest high school football talent in the state.

With the regular season opener still two weeks away, Coach Wilbur Lofton told the Dad' Club last night, "We will be looking for four or five more football players tonight to give us the depth and balance we need for the upcoming season".

With several key spots on the Yellow Jacket varsity still shallow in solid football players, tonight's intrasquad clash will offer the younger boys an opportunity to impress their coaches under game conditions. This fact alone should be reason enough to expect a spirited effort tonight.

Leesburg has a lot of potential this year, as evidenced by their fine performance in the Tangerine Bowl Jamboree Friday night. If a few more back up players can be uncovered to fill in adequately for the two-way performers on the Jackets, then 1970 should be a very good year.

Every boy on the squad is slated for duty tonight, if available, and the proceeds from the game goes for a very worthy cause.

Game time is 7:30. See you at Memorial Stadium.

Jackets Face Melbourne In Season Finale Tonight, November 1953

LEESBURG - The Leesburg Yellow Jackets will wind up the 1953 football schedule tonight against the Bulldogs of Melbourne High on the East Coast school's gridiron. The match was postponed from an earlier October date due to high waters and a threatening hurricane.

Head Coach Ed Stack reported his squad in good physical shape, with all of the players ready for action. The team showed plenty of zip in Wednesday's practice session and ran through the offensive plays with clockwork precision. A letdown followed in Thursday's drills, which is a favorable sign according to past performances. Especially on two occasions before important OBC tilts, the Jackets were up for the Wednesday drills, slacked off on Thursdays, and then played stellar games against Apopka and Winter Park.

Although halfback Jack Woodard is still carrying a bandaged hand, the first six of Coach Stack's backfield performers are in the peak shape of the season, and should be able to chalk up several touchdowns against the up-and-down Bulldog team. Guard Howard Eaton, who has been out of action since the Sanford game with a leg injury, may see some action.

Melbourne's chief scoring threat is Fred Howard, a dangerous speed merchant who has tallied six TDs this season. Don Bice and Charles Layne are two other backfield performers that may give the Jacket defense trouble.

The Bulldogs, who boast a tie with the strong Winter Park outfit, were contenders for the conference title until loss to Apopka and Cocoa knocked them out of the picture.

The Yellow Jackets are favored to win by three touchdowns, but the prestige to be gained by knocking off the loop champions may inspire the host team to make it a closer contest than expected.

Athlete of the Week, October 1953

This week we will have only one athlete, "Giles Daycon" Pettit. Giles has been playing football since the tenth grade when he played first-string in his first year, which is not usually done. Giles played center that year on a team consisting mainly of Sophomores.

Last year, Giles played center and played an important part in the upset of Melbourne. He also played in the backfield part of the time, filling in for injured backs.

This year, Giles hurt his foot in pre-season drills and has seen limited service so far. But Giles told us this morning that he expected to see a lot of work Friday.

Giles stands 6' 1 1/2" weights 165 and is 17 years old.

Jackets Trounce Buccaneers, October 20, 1943

The Yellow Jackets went on a rampage Friday night by taking the Buccaneers to the tune of 20-0. The outweighed Yellow Jackets took advantage of every break, and racked up a major Northeast Conference victory.

The Buccaneers tried their T formation and shift but had to use power to break through the Yellow Jacket's forward wall. The Jackets had to use great deception and speed to get through the hard rushing Daytona line. The score was early in the game. After a long march by the Buccaneers Mathews intercepted a pass on about the one yard line, and ran the distance to pay dirt. The kick by Gilchrist was good and the score was 7-0. This was the only score during the first period of the game.

In the second quarter, Broadway, after an exchange of punts, took the ball and doing a beautiful piece of broken field running, made the second tally. The kick again by Gilchrist was good putting Leeburgs ahead 14-0. No more score was made that period.

During the half, the L.H.S. band put on a drill. They made a D for Daytona, L for Leesburg, U.S.A. and a football.

The third period was scoreless with the teams in a punting duel. Leesburg getting the edge, put the ball back deep in the Daytona territory. The fourth quarter Mathews again took a very poor punt on the Buccaneers' 30 yard line and shaking off three tacklers, got behind some interference and ran for pay dirt. The kick by Gilchrist was wide and the score stood Leesburg 20, Daytona 0.

Daytona was a constant threat to the Yellow Jackets with Hogan leading the Buccaneers. Hogan was stopped by the great defensive plays of the Jackets. This strong forward wall consisted of Newman, Baxter, McCammon, Tyre, Carlton, Trumm, Teeter, Littleton, and the Gilchrist brothers (Stu doing some fine kicking). During the last quarter all the substitutes got to see action.

Daytona was getting desperate at the last and took to the air. Little Joe Lee got his hands on one to give Leesburg the possession of the ball when the game ended.

In the T formation with Drake doing great work at quarterback, Mathews, Harvey, Broadway and Bennett, gave the Buccaneers an unpleasant time trying to stop them. Playing like this will help the Jackets out in the conference race.
