TAVARES, FL - It was a hot humid night at Argin A. Boggus Stadium on the campus of the Tavares High School Friday. Leesburg and Tavares met in the both teams non-district season opener Friday Night. It was the renewing of the Dead River Rivarly that dates all the way back to 1924. Both schools are located 10 miles apart and the two cities border each creating a tense rivalry over the years.

Leesburg (1-0, 0-0) overcame a sluggish first half to shutout Tavares 24-0 for it's second consecutive season opener win. The Jackets defense last shutout was a 45-0 homecoming win over Lake Minneola October 7, 2011. The shutout was the second for the Jackets in the Randy Trivers era.

The Jackets have outscored the Bulldogs in their last three meetings 100 to 21. Leesburg Head Coach Randy Trivers is 3-0 against Tavares alltime.

The Jackets led only 7-0 at halftime on a 15 touchdown catch by junior running back Bryant "Mr. No" Benton. Benton gained 74 yards on 16 carries for Leesburg in varsity regular season debut as the Jackets feature back.

"Going into half time our thoughts was to come out and drown them with the way the Jackets play," said Benton who had the Jackets only score against Orlando L.C. Jones last week. "Halftime coach Trivers said "We are going to go out and win the game"

The Leesburg passing offense got untracked and had three touchdowns and a 147 yards. Sophomore WR Bryan Jefferson had a monster game leading the Leesburg offense in with two big touchdown receptions. Jefferson finished the night with 103 yards, four receptions and two touchdowns from 34 and 47 yards out.

The offense moved the ball with patience and precision taking what the Tavares defense gave them.

"The keys to last nights win over Tavares was special teams and the defense," Chris Smith senior Offensive Lineman said.

The Yellow Jackets defense showed much improvement last night after giving up 31 points to Orlando L.C. Jones in the Kickoff Classic last week. Tavares was able to move the ball between the 30 yard lines. However, anytime the Bulldogs threatened to score, the Yellow Jackets stiffened and turned the home team away.

Jordan Tucker earned the MVP of the week for the Jackets

"I think the keys were great defense and offensive execution," Tucker said. "We played hard and didn't falter even when they were threatening to score. "I think tavares did well stopping the run. Considering all our touchdowns were passes"

"Tavares ran the ball well last night," said Benton.
