Hanks Now Gives A Lift To Morningside Football

January 19, 1992|By Joe Williams of The Sentinel Staff

For those who remember Lee Hanks' athletic career at Leesburg High School, it probably doesn't come as a big surprise when Morningside College football coach Dave Dolch calls Hanks, ''pound for pound, our strongest guy.''

Two years ago, if you recall, Hanks backed up a great senior year in football with an even greater year in weightlifting.

Hanks won the Class AAA Florida High School Weightlifting Tournament's 181-pound class, setting two state records along the way, one for the bench press, lifting 420 pounds, and the other for total weight at 710 pounds.

Hanks, who was the fullback for the Yellow Jackets, rushed for only 577 yards his senior season, but there were reasons that contributed to that total. He was injured and forced to miss three full games. He also wasn't at full strength in a couple of other games.

Then, there was a backfield mate named Undra Mitchem, who rushed for 1,105 yards and benefited largely from Hanks' presence - either as a blocker or as a decoy in the triple-option.

Hanks, 5 feet 8 and 188 pounds, carried the ball 56 times for 190 yards for the Chiefs, and he also had 6 receptions for another 60 yards and scored one touchdown this past season. Hanks is one of the players the Chiefs, an NCAA Division II team, will be counting on next year.

''We really expect him to come into his own next season,'' Dolch said.
