Leesburg High School's JV footballers meet the Eustis JV's tonight in a 7:30 encounter at Memorial Field. The Buddy Lowe led JV's will be seeking their second win of the young season and are expected to unleash their vaunted offense at the Eustis Panther JV's.
Jeff Hancock leads the JV attack from his quarterback spot and the sophomore passed for 301 yards in the season's opener against DeLand last week.
The main target of Hancock's passes will be fleet-footed flanker Jim Busby, and split end Sidney Upshaw. Both receivers were on the paydirt end of Hancock aerials in the DeLand game, with Busby snagging a pair of payoff tosses and Upshaw came up with a single tally.
If this wasn't enough for any opposing coach to worry about, Lowe can call on Alex Upshaw and Bill Keller for his running attack and the twosome gives the JV team a running game to boast to, Upshaw rambled for 122 yards overland against the DeLand Bulldogs last week and the big freshman star is just beginning to come into his own.
The only thing lacking for Upshaw to be a bona-fide star as a running back is experience and hard work, but both should be forthcoming as the season progresses this year. Alex is a big youngster, standing 6-3, and has the power to blast out the tough yardage from the middle, as well as speed enough to break the long gainer around the outside.
Billy Keller shows a lot of determination at his halfback spot and offers a fine compliment to the ability of Upshaw.
Working at the tight end spot tonight is rugged Joe Carson, a rangy 6-3 sophomore who has the potential to be a fine one at the position.
Jay Lukens and Danny Cortie handle the tackle spots with some solid line play. Both boys have shown tremendous improvement at their positions and this is one of the stronger points on the JV squad.
Working out of the guard spots will be Huffy Huffman and Mike Thomas, and this twosome will be the primary blockers to make the JV running game go.
Danny Dowliss is the center when the team is on offense and is slated to open at the spot tonight.
On defense, Joe Carson works at the middle spot on the defensive front line, flanked by Lukens and Cortie at tackle. Chuck Morgan and David Tomczak will be at defensive end, with Danny Dowless and Billy Keller at linebacker.
In the secondary, Mike Neff and Charlie McDaniel work from the cornerback slots, with Jimmy Busby and Troy Wilson operating as the deep safeties.
Coach Lowe doesn't know what to expect from Eustis tonight but expects his squad to be ready for anything the Panthers may unveil. With Hancock in good form, the Baby Jackets will come out firing and put the pressure on the defense of the Panthers to stop them.
