The Leesburg Fighting Yellow Jackets left the practice field as a tired group yesterday afternoon, the result of the coaching staff's delight search for more depth to balance out the 1970 edition of LHS footballers.
With the 1970 season getting cranked off with the big Jamboree slated for the Tangerine Bowl Friday night, the squad is hard at work searching for the right combination to hold their own as they clash with the Class AA powers from Orlando; Edgewater and Boone.
At the conclusion of practice yesterday, Head Coach Wilbur Lofton expressed his pleasure at the way his first team has been appearing but offered genuine concern when the subject of team depth was brought up.
Lofton said "I wouldn't trade my first fifteen players for anybody's in the state but after that, Lord help us".
Several of the important cogs in the Yellow Jacket machine has been slowed by nagging injuries and it is a question of time whether these boys will be ready for the Jamboree Friday night.
Players the caliber of Lynn Gilbert, Phil McEachern, and Skellie Morris are all going at less than top speed and each one plays an important part in the 1970 plans of Lofton, Dabney, and Wettstein, Jacket mentors.
Hard hitting highlighted the full speed drills run by the Jackets yesterday, with Tommy Ryan and Hovie Guthrie clipping off good runs behind the direction of junior quarterback Andy Carlton. The quarterback spot is one that is very much a key to Yellow Jackets fortunes in 1970, because with Carlton, the Jackets have one of the finest passers in the state, Without him, the situation becomes very clouded, indeed.
Exhibiting his throwing arm on the long pass, Carlton tossed a long completion to scatback Tim Wesley during drills yesterday, offering what should be one of the best pass-catch teams around.
The heart of the Jackets line is a thing of strength to watch, as tall Greg Johnson and solid Lynn Gilbert anchor the middle in great fashion. Flanked at the defensive end spots by tough Kenny Hicks and young Ken Mosely, the front four of the Jackets will be able to hold their own against anyone.
A linebacking trio of Tommy Ryan, Phil McEachern, and Leon Scott has the ability to shut off the running plays, as well as helping out on pass defense, filling a big spot in the Jackets defense this year. If this group can remain healthy, the jackets defense should be as tough as it has been for the past couple of seasons.
The Jamboree Friday night will offer answers to many questions on the 1970 Yellow Jackets, and Coach Lofton expresses his fears of the Orlando Class AA powers with five very important words, "I hope we'll be ready".
Jamboree tickets are on sale now at the LHS athletic department and all proceeds collected off the advance sale will be retained by the local school. If you plan to attend the game in Orlando, buy your tickets at home and help the LHS athletic dept.
