Fletcher's Senators To Tackle Leesburg In Non-Conference Tilt At Beach Tonight, November 1953

Fletcher doormat of the Northeast Conference, takes on Leesburg leader of the Orange Belt Conference, tonight at the beach. And despite the records, Coach Ish Brant is expecting his Senators to play one of their best games. Kickoff time is 8 o'clock.

Fletcher has won only once while losing six, exactly opposite to its opponent which has won six and lost only once.

"We have had good workouts this week" said Brant. "The boys should be in good shape for Leesburg."

Fletcher may have some boys sidelined because of an outbreak of colds and the flu. Bobby Bibby, Ed Spencer and Ed McCormick are out of action and Bill Blinn and Raymond Grimes may have to sit on the bench.

The game will be the next to the last at the Beach for the Senators. A clash with Mainland on Nov. 20 is the final home game.

Backs Mayo Gabriel, Joe Moore and Don Smith are expected to carry the offensive load for the Senators.

Brant reports the team spirit high despite last week's 58-0 loss to Palatka. Although the Senators are having one of their worst years, the future looks bright. Most of the players are sophomores and juniors.

Probable and juniors.

Probable starting lineups:

Fletcher: Jonson 150, LE, Hagood 190 LT, Fogg 205 LG, Newman 160 C, Brown 145 RG, Thompson 200 RT, Scanlan 150 RE, Patterson 150, QB, Gabriel 155 LH, Moore 140 RH, Smith 160 FB

Leesburg: Holloway 170 LE, Regnval 175 LT, Webb 170 LG, Pettit 165 C, Grigsby 160 RG, Richardson 195 RT, Fechtel 180 RE, McLean 150 QB, Marshall 170 LH, Woodard 175 RH, Schlosser 160 FB

Fletcher Grid Team Beaten By Leesburg, November 1953

Orange Belt Conference Leaders Record 21-6 Win at Beach

By GEORGE BOOKER

Leesburg, a ball club that has won six of seven games, claimed its seventh at the beach last night by thumping Fletcher, 21-6 at Jacksonville Beach. Of the seven games won by the Orange Belt Conference leaders, it was one of the bitterest on their schedule, Fletcher, winning only once in seven games, battling the Yellow Jackets to the wire in a vicious tackling game.

The heat of battle reached its peak in the fourth period when a defending Fletcher back tangled briefly with a Leesburg end on a pass play that resulted in a flareup of tempers.

Fletcher tried desperately for its second win with a second period touchdown that was matched by Leesburg on the return kickoff. Of the separate TD's only Leesburg managed to convert, putting the Jackets ahead 7-6, a lead they never relinquished. From there on out, the mid-starters ran and passed against a hot-and-cold Fletcher defense that buckled at two crucial times that resulted in Leesburg touchdowns.

Wallace Hall, grabbing two Billy McLean passes for gains of 43 and 15 yards in the third period, plunged for two of Leesburg's touchdowns, with McLean getting the other on a quarterback sneak. McLean's passes played an effective part in two of the Jackets three drives.

Fletcher counted its only TD in the second period after a Senator punt was recovered by Fletcher's Glen Burgess on the Leesburg 35. Jimmy Batts scored from the 12. The point try was no good.

Score by quarters:

Fletcher........... 6  0  0  0  -  6
Leesburg......... 0 14 7 0  - 21
