FAIRFAX - The VUL Dragons finished their first season with a bang, defeating the George Mason Patriots 40-0 in Fairfax. Redshirt freshman, Macha Shinhoster (Miami, FL), completed the game with 175 rushing yards and two touchdowns for the Dragons while Dwan Thornton (Washington, D.C.) rushed for 150 yards and had one touchdown.

“Our team played extremely well against the Patriots - our goal was to finish as strong as we want to start our 2012 season,” said Coach Bailey. The Dragons finished with a season high of 395 offensive yards against the Patriots' 171 with 353 of those yards coming from their run game.

In the first half of the game both teams went scoreless in the first quarter. Making their way up the field in the second quarter Dragons quarterback Delonte’ Williams was sacked and fumbled on a third-and-goal play. The ball would be recovered by the Patriots.

Not fazed by the Patriots pressure, the Dragons defense powered by Mario Woods (Norfolk, VA) and Blake Jones (Seattle, WA) only allowed the Patriots to run three plays, each of which resulting in a total of seven yards.

The Dragons began their drive on the Patriots 14 yard line and ended with Shinhoster on the short run in the end zone for a touchdown; Shane Wood‘s (Danville, VA) extra point attempt was blocked and the score remained 6-0.

VUL continued to turn up the game as defensive back as Bryan Hazel (Tampa, FL) blocked the Patriots 38 yard field goal attempt. The Patriots defense responded by sacking Williams on the third down, forcing the Dragons to punt the ball.

Dontra’ Matthews (Leesburg High School, Palatka, FL)
With a little over three minutes in the first half the Dragons defensive back Dontra’ Matthews (Leesburg High School, Palatka, FL) intercepted the Patriots pass and converted a 16 yard play for VUL. Starting to drive on their own 48 yard line the Dragons were forced to punt. But instead of punting the ball Elliot Moore (Danville, CA) ran for 30 yards and a first down.

The Dragons took advantage of the first down and nine plays later, Avery Neloms (Tampa, FL) ran in for a touchdown - Wood’s extra point attempt was good. VUL would go into the locker room with the lead of 13-0.

The second half was an even better for the Dragons. Mike Chatman (Petersburg, VA) of the Dragons sacked the Patriots and forced a fumble. Off of his own forced fumble, Chatman would score a 22 yard touchdown, making the score 19-0.

The Dragons defense didn't miss a beat. Randall Braxton (Richmond, VA), sacked the Patriots quarterback forcing a fumble in which he recovered. The Dragons then scored once again with a seven yard reception to fullback, Dominik Davenport, increasing the score to 26-0.

In the Dragons final quarter of the season, Shinhoster didn’t waste any time and ran a 59 yard touchdown for VUL, score 33-0.

VUL’s defense continued making a statement after sacking the quarterback four times. With four minutes left in the game Thornton ran in the end zone for an 82 yard touchdown - Wood’s kick attempt was good. The Dragons ended the game 40-0, an all time season high.

The Dragons finished their very first season since 1954 4-6 with a victory over George Mason and won two out-of-three of their home games this season.
