Quarterback Vinny Testaverde led the University of Miami (Fla.) to a 34-14 opening football victory over host University of South Carolina in Columbia Saturday.
Meanwhile Florida State University walked off with a 24-0 decision over visiting Toledo. Dayne Williams (Leesburg High School, Leesburg Florida) and David Palmer scored second quarter touchdowns on runs of 36 and 7 yards respectively highlighting a 529-yard offensive attack that powered 11th ranked Florida State to its victory.
The Seminoles tuning up for next weeks showdown with No. 8 Nebraska, shook off a sloppy start to post their 10th straight season opening triumph under coach Bobby Bowden.
Toledo, 0-1, was unable to take advantage of six Florida State turnovers, including fumbles on the Seminoles first three offensive possessions.
Derek Schmidt kicked a 24-yard field goal to get the Seminoles rolling late in the first period. Williams and Palmer both scored in the second quarter as Florida State took a 17-0 halftime lead.
Sophomore quarterback Chip Ferguson completed 17 of 28 passes for 176 yards before turning over the reins of FSU's high powered offense to red-shirt freshmen Peter Tom Willis.
Willis hit eight of 11 passes for 96 yards, including a 12 yard toss to Herb Gainer to complete Florida State's scoring with 8:33 left in the final period.
In other college football games, Louisiana Tech edged Tulsa 22-17; Tennessee State blanked Morris Brown 27-0. Marshall crushed West Virginia Tech 42-0 and Nevada-Reno spanked Fullerton State 49-3.
