Two of the area's best success stories of the year Wildwood's John Brantley and Fruitland Park's Dayne Williams-finished off the football season on a high note.
Brantley played the last game of his career for Georgia in the Liberty Bowl, guiding the Bulldogs to a win over Arkansas. Brantley had nine total tackles in the game, with five being solo tackles. The senior linebacker also broke up a pass.
On the season, Brantley led the Bulldogs with 154 total tackles-78 solos and 76 assists. The 6-2, 225 pounder will be one of the East's linebackers in the Hula Bowl in Honolulu on Jan. 16.
Williams, a junior at Florida State, scored on a 4-yard touchdown run in the Seminoles 31-28 win over Nebraska in the Fiesta Bowl. The win lifted FSU to a No. 2 national ranking.
Williams scored on his now famous 34-wham play in the second quarter, tying the game at 14-14. In the fourth quarter however, the 34 wham failed for only the second time this year. Williams was flipped over while trying to score on the left side.
The touchdown gave the 6-1, 232 pounder his 16th score of the year. That put Williams in second in the FSU record books for most touchdowns rushing in a year. Taliback Greg Allen holds the record with 20 rushing TDs in the 1982 season. Williams is also second on the career rushing TD list at Florida State. Williams total of 21 puts him one ahead of Mark Lyles (1976-1979). Onxce again, Allen leads that category with 44 rushing TDs spanning 1981-84. Williams has one more year left needing 23 touchdowns to tie the record Williams 21, was seen in Leesburg on Monday, sporting his new Fiesta Bowl watch, of course.
