Good Job Of Guarding

LEESBURG - Coach Wilbur Lofton was especially well pleased with one aspect of Tuesday's Yellow Jacket practice as Leesburg works towards its Tangerine Bowl Jamboree appearance.

Lofton liked the way his interior offensive line blocked during a passing scrimmage. Sam Carson, James Charles, Bill Pok, Sam Mackey and Greg Johnson did a fine job of protecting quarterback Andy Carlton. Carlton completed several passes to Tim Wesley, Jim Busby and Gene Elton.

The Jackets will play Boone in the first quarter, beginning at 7:30, and then take on Edgewater in the fourth quarter. Tickets are on sale at Athletic Director E.P. Burt's office. Cost is $2 for adults and $1 for students.

Leesburg fans are reminded that they should purchase their tickets here if possible, because the Yellow Jackets receive all the money from ticket sales that they take in at the school. Leesburg receives only one-fourth of the gate receipts, after expenses, at the Tangerine Bowl.

Jackets Fit, Lofton Happy, August 17, 1971

LEESBURG - Leesburg High School's varsity football team held its first practice of the 1971 season Monday, and Coach Wilbur Lofton was pleased.

"We came back in pretty good shape," Lofton said, after he and assistants Hubert Dabney and Max Wettstein had timed the Jackets in 40 and 50-yard dashes and one mile runs.

Tim Wesley and Chuck Ward turned in the best 40 times among the backs with a 4.6. Other good times from backs included Andy Carlton, Troy Wilson, Willy Neely and Reddick Williams at 4.7, and Haywood Richardson and LaVelle Rixie at 4.8.

Guard Charles Penley had the best 40 time among linemen with a 4.8, while Sam Mackey and Bill Keller recorded 5.0. Clifford Williams, Bill Polk and Sam Carson were grouped at 5.1, while Greg Johnson had 5.2.

Jeff Hancock turned in the best mile time from the backs, 5.51, while Denny Dowless at 6.05 and Penley at 6.08 topped the linemen.

Coach Lofton said he plans to work on the team's defense and kicking game in the morning practices and devote much of the afternoon time to the offense.

The Yellow Jackets play a quarter against Boone and Edgewater Sept. 2 in Orlando's Tangerine Bowl Jamboree, and open with an Orange Belt Conference game Sept. 17 at home against Ocoee.
