Denver - Sixth Draft Pick Danny Trevathan (Leesburg High School, Leesburg Florida) returned to practice yesterday for the Broncos — his first practice since injuring his ankle in the team’s preseason opener at Chicago on Aug. 9.

Trevathan fully participated in the shells-and-shorts practice.
“That was great, especially to see Tracy back,” linebacker Joe Mays said. “We got Danny back — the rookie back. He’s able to come out here and work out. Everybody said he came off of a retirement. They were joking around with him. It’s great to have guys back to get our depth back and get some more guys out here so they can get some reps as well.”

Trevathan's return from a sprained ankle, helps bolster a linebacker unit that has been hit hard by injuries. Veteran Keith Brooking remains out with a sore hamstring, and Mike Mohamed is not practicing Monday because of a hamstring injury he suffered against Seattle.

Getting Carter, Trevathan and Porter backs help improve the Broncos' defensive depth, something that was an obvious issue in the second half of Saturday's 30-10 loss to Seattle.

"We've got a lot of work to do with some of the backups that went in," coach John Fox said.

Trevathan, Denver's last pick in the 2012 NFL draft, was pushing to be a part of the Broncos' specialty packages on defense with a knack for making plays in practice before he suffered an ankle injury in the preseason opener. Trevathan didn't play Saturday in the second preseason game, against the Seahawks, but returned to practice Monday.

Trevathan has had as good a training camp as any rookie on the roster, making the most of the chances given to him. Trevathan is ready to be a key part of the defense this season and has already found his way into the nickel package, where he could be very effective.

But what the team has to be most happy about with Trevathan's progress is the fact that he will make any decision to cut ties with D.J. Williams, which seems to be closer to becoming a reality with each passing day, much easier.

Trevathan has seen snaps on the first-team nickel defense, and the coaches rave about his performance on a seemingly daily basis.
